Re: 54 vs 64
Also, the 54 has a better trigger although a little tinkering. first and foremost a lighter spring, produces a much improved trigger in the 64. Weatherby wrapped their version of the 64 in a beautiful, ergonomic stock with a bargain price.
Both actions are very accurate, so you really can't go wrong.

Re: 54 vs 64
Trigger comparisons are more complicated than just "you get a better trigger on a 54 vs 64." Yes, looking at typical silhouette rifles, if you compare a single stage 5092 trigger from a 64-action 1416DKL and a two-stage 5109 trigger from a 54-action 1712, the 5109 wins hands down. On the other hand, my 64 MPR with a two-stage 5098 trigger is just as nice or nicer than my 5109 trigger. Let's leave triggers out of a comparison.
Recent Anschutz manufacturing anomalies are something to consider if one is contemplating purchase of a new 64-action rifle. Over a year ago the top of the receiver was changed from a "dimpled" surface

to a "scalloped" surface

The new receiver top has bumps that make zeroing a scope problematic. Typically, the bumps are higher in the front section and the scope points too far upward to zero. Rimfire Technologies and others have solutions, but a new 64-action buyer has to be aware that Anschutz engineering and manufacturing isn't what it used to be. You're going to have issues with their low-end models.

Re: 54 vs 64
What do you mean when you say lower end 64 actions? What models are questionable?

When I say you're going to have issues with their lower end models, I was referring to all their 64 actioned rifles with the new "scallops". The issue is the deformed metal on top of the receiver, these "bumps" on the new scallops. This problem can be overcome and the 64 actioned rifles are first-rate after one obtains a base mount that bridges the bumps. DIP http://www.diproductsinc.com/Products.aspx?CAT=3599 and others are aware of the bumps and sell mounts that attach to just the edges of the dovetail and have enough clearance on the bottom of the piece to clear the bumps.
Which models are affected? My 64 MPR had a scalloped receiver and I've seen other folk's 1416s with them. I've heard of problems also on the 64 S benchrest model. I have not heard of or seen a Weatherby XXII with a scalloped receiver, but I expect that will happen in time.

My Weatherby has the dimples and I bought it last year. The only part I dislike is the trigger on the weatherby. It has a mile of take up on it. The pull weight is adjustable and once you get to that point it is a nice break but initial travel feels like a 1/4 inch or more.
