What Barrel?
What is the brand and contour to use on a 1712 in a Pharr stock w/ leupold BR24 and make weight. I would like to finish out barrel around 21-22". I also would like a straight taper if possible. If anyone has something that will suit me, I'd rather buy a used one than wait 6 months on a manufacturer. Thanks, Mason.

I normally use Lilja tight bore barrels in the 53 R contour, they will make weight for Hunter class on a Pharr stock.

There are many very good barrel makers, but if you stray from Evelio's advice (not that I would, of course...
), check the weight and actual contour measurements very carefully because different builders may list the same contours but they are not the same! A Krieger #3 is not necessarily the same as a Broughton #3 or a Lilja #3.

I only had a 3 month wait on a Lilja bbl for my HP. If you order one he has in stock, there is no wait except the UPS shipping. His bbls are as good as any made, I think.

Tim North (Broughton) has a #5K contour (that's for Krieger) on file...not that his #5 contour isn't good, but I knew that the #5 Krieger made weight on my Hunter Rifle at 26 inches and with only ounces to spare did not want to experiment. He was very cooperative. It was a 5R 6.5mm barrel and shoots quite well.BlauBear wrote:There are many very good barrel makers, but if you stray from Evelio's advice (not that I would, of course...), check the weight and actual contour measurements very carefully because different builders may list the same contours but they are not the same! Carefull Rick, the weight limit on a High Power hunter is 9.0 lbs. the limit for a smallbore is 8 1/2 lbs. A 1/2 lb. can make a big difference in which contour to get. The no.5 will probably make weight if it is fluted, and you are using one on the 16 ounce scope.

The decision has been made and the gun is on it's way to Evelio. Thanks for the input.

Yup, love Broughton barrels but a #5 Broughton is heavier than a #5 Lilja, so be careful with your basis for comparison. It was an "Oh... Well..." moment.
