rifle recommendation wanted

Post by thskeer »

OK,

I have a marlin 39a already.

Is there a Marlin for Pistol caliber?
What is the best gun and sight combination for Pistol caliber?

Thanks

I use a Marlin .357 Model 1894CB with the 20" barrel. Easy to load for and does a nice job.

I started out with a Marlin 357 but with the shorter 18.5 barrel. I quickly found out that the short sighting radius is a big disadvantage. Tried mounting a tang sight out it to increase the distance and it helped but still not enough. Most everyone is shooting longer barreled guns. I since bought a Puma with 24 inch barrel and feel that this is a better choice.

Marlin used to make an 1897 CB in 357 Magnum wiht a 24 inch barrell. If you look around gunbroker you can find one in like new condition. The longer barrell is definitely better. You can also get an 1894CL in 32-20 with a 22 inch barrell. . Some of the better shooters in my club use those and do well with them.

Hey Tom, I started with a Rossi 92 puma in 357 mag 20" barrel with factory sights worked really well. Now I'm using a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in 32 mag 20" barrel williams/lyman getting some good scores in CA. Just got a Marlin 1894CL in 32-20. 22" barrel I'm just getting around to load testing and hopefully better scores than previous attempts. I'm using a Marlin 336a in 30-30 170 gr. Hornady interlocks. over 32gr of IMR 4064. I shot 2 master class scores in a row at Pala in sept. Get to shoot Pala again in Nov. I might even get to shoot at LASC also. Steve

I have a Marlin 1894M in .22 magnum that does a nice job in PC. The 22 magnum will leave an occasional ram standing, but is very accurate and has very little recoil. This gun was so nice my wife took it from me .
I have recently had my Marlin 1894c converted to a Cowboy Limited and Marlin did a great job. The .357 round is a great round to load and shoot in PC. I shot a couple of matches with the .357 in the CLA 200 yard match and the round will reliably put the Rams down at Raton, but the load is a maximum 180grain load. I purchased a Marlin Cowboy in 38-55 and with a very mild load and a 240 grain cast slug, all the targets fall easily.

Like many on this board, I have run a gamet of different cartridges for the PC game. My experience says to find a 32-20 or 25-20 Marlin and you will have a gun that is about as good as it can get for the PC game. I have tried, 357, 44 mag (still playing with this one, key word playing), 22 mag, 32-20 and 22lr. I am now playing around with the 44 mag (just for fun), and shooting in more serious competion the 32-20 with my 22lr as backup.

I would get a rifle with a 24" barrel in 32-20 or 25-20. A friend of mine is getting a 73 in 32-20 made by uberti, I think this would be an excellent choice. I shoot a 1892 winchester in 25-20, it has put 5 shots in one raged hole off a bench at 50 meters with the right load.

What is the powder of your choice for the 25-20?

Yea, "inquiring minds want to know". ;)

Tell us about the load.

My particular 1892 likes the speer 75 grain bullets- all three powders work well with my 25-20 winchester and those are 4227 , h-110 and 322 powders. I would recommend only neck sizing, and wolf primers and checking case length after each firing. Good shooting

I have been doing some looking around for 25/20 rifles and, apparently, only the (22" round barrel) Marlin 1894 CL and the original Win 92s are available in the 25/20. The importer of the repro 92 says there is not sufficient interest to warrant.... The Uberti 1873 rifles (Cimarron and Taylor) offer the 32/20, but not the 25/20. Too bad.
