Like so many things in life, this problem may not be entirely as it seems. A little experimentation turned up a range of motion problem: Pulling in towards my shoulder past a point causes pain, so length of pull is an issue. A little more experimentation with a rifle that has the correct LOP compared to one that's too short proved the point. Evelio has also suggested that picking the rifle up and putting it down is a problem, something experimentation also proved.
So, lighter is better, longer LOP is better and lowered recoil with more padding is better. Interesting formula, isn't it?

Actually, the more I understand the problem and process information from the forum, the tamer the rifle becomes. It is important that contact points and LOP are correct on the rifle, but it looks like exotic solutions are unnecessary. Tinker with the load a little, which I know breaks your heart, then let Evelio work his magic and it should come out fine. It sounds like a pretty standard formula.
When in doubt, assume nothing, fix the obvious problems, and then re-test. The Remington .260 action looks like the perfect starting point and will probably come through unchanged. Pretty simple compared to some of my other snipe hunts.

I still think the best solution would be for you to shoot my 45-120 built on the Ruger #1 Tropical. With a 500 grain barnes bullet over a couple of inches or so of 7828 the flinch making beast will make you forget about any unpleasantness associated with the 260. If you can still pick up the 260 after a couple of shots with that beast you will never feel anything in your shoulder again......Kind of like kissing a pig first thing in the morning......After that, it has to get better....

Following John's line of thinking, I would recommend a 416 Rigby with a 400 grain bullet and 107 grains of powder. It is the champ at knocking down the steel target, and it's frame, at our 300 yard range. The increased blood flow in the shoulder could be considered good therapy. The only concern is the involuntary muscle spasms that might affect trigger control.
Or you might consider reducing recoil by choosing a cartridge even smaller than the 260. I'm in the initial throes of load development with a 6.5-250, aka 260 Bobcat. With 107 and 142 grain Match Kings and about 33 grains of powder the recoil is very mild. Feeds slick out of the magazine of a Remi 700 and is showing 1/2 inch groups. Reports from other shooters say it reliably takes down the 500 meter ram. Other choices might be 6.5X47 Lapua or a 7BR.

This is becoming fun now that we've re-framed it as a challenge. Everyone struggles with recoil in a 40 round match, and I've heard the stories from Raton about competitors and equipment wearing down over several days. And I went through basic training with an M14 so recoil is no surprise, although the reaction of this older shoulder took me off guard. Tuning self and gear is the name of the game.
