Re: Which way?
I prefer all the animals to be facing up...after I've fired on them. Seldom happens though.
Those critters are not hard to hit, they're just so darn easy to miss!

Re: Which way?
Please elaborate on the effects of Coriolis (horizontal as well as vertical), gyroscopic drift and rifling twist direction as they impact .22 ballistics at smallbore silhouette distances. I am also interested in your experience with such effects based on direction of fire as well as effects of wind (vertical as well as horizontal). Of course, please couch your observations in specific measurements at distances discussed. Finally, what tools and tricks do we have at our disposal to mitigate the potential impact, if any, of above?atomicbrh wrote:Others may have discovered something different but in the Northern hemisphere most of my cheap rimfire barrels are pushing the bullet to the right at the 77 and 100 meter distance. If the Turkey is facing toward 9 o'clock does that result in higher Turkey bank scores over a period of time due to the bullet more naturally wanting to strike into the tail of the Turkey?

I only wish Tbone were around. He was a expert on bilateral multiplex demodulation.

Is anyone investigating multi-phasic harmonics from concurrent muzzle resonance and proximal target strikes?

Re: Which way?
I used to know all that science stuff but working 27 years for the Federal government has dumbed me down. My son and I just see the bullet going to the right at Turkeys and Rams on some of our worst barrels. The paper proves it also. With certain rare lots of ammo the windage path of the bullet will be more centered with those particular rifles. Trying to save up enough money to buy better barrels. Rebarrelling will be less time consuming that trying to find ammo that shoots good in those rifles.
This SIlhouette stuff is fun and the Steelchickens forum members provide great stress relief or should I say comedy relief. I needed it this morning.

Re: Which way?
Tony, it's true they complained about that. First, the targets were the same for everyone, if not they need to paint them so no dark spots show. Second, the letters and tits can be ground off. Some people seem to think that because of the direction they show up on the NRA sheets that they need to be set up that way. The rule book doesn't address that issue at all. Bottom line is it doesn't matter what you do, someone will bitch about it. The minute there is any imperfection on a target, it needs to be painted? That was the issue at PHX but it just wasn't said in thoes terms. Next thing you know is someone will bitch because you use more expensive ammo than they do. You just can't please everyone.

Re: Which way?
While it's not the same as the smallbore targets, it's common practice in HP to face 'all' the animals the same way one day then the opposite the next because of the target cupping. Surprised someone hasn't complained about that yet...

Re: Which way?
When we first started using cast targets in California we used to shoot at them with the letters towards the shooters, we did that for years without anybody making an issue of it and since the rules do not specify which way the targets should face and make no mention of the lettering on the approved cast targets if any club wanted to face the targets with the letters towards the shooters they would be within the rules to do so. The only requirement is that "All targets of the same type shall be faced in the same direction in each bank"
Funny that pistol silhouette shooters would have every five targets facing a different way to help them prevent cross firing. How or which way they are facing does not seem to be an issue with them as long as the banks left and right to theirs is different.

Re: Which way?
Rarely have I seen paint jobs so good on animals in a match that there is no definite aiming point if an individual wanted to find one. I agree that all animals in a bank should face the same way, alternating direction between banks I have seen several times and it really doesn't matter, there are far more "shot altering" factors at every range. So worry about the wind direction, speed, lighting, angle etc. and don't let the small stuff bother you.
And yes Bob it is in the 40's here with 20+ mph breeze, even with sun out now it is cold.

Re: Which way?
I can't agree with Mary and Tony more. The small stuff is the least of our worries. I once went to see an aerial longbow shooting demonstration which was put on by the late Rev. Stacy Grosscup who was a renown trick shooter. He started out hitting beach ball sized foam disks thrown in the air, he worked his way down to frissbee sized ones and ended his demonstration by hitting 3 out of 5 asprins thrown in the air. All of these shot with a bow with no sights. I never forgot his statement on target differences. He said "big or small, every target has the same size center. It's up to you to aim there." RIP Mr. Grosscup. Mark Varner

Re: Which way?
Yes, Mary, there are usually spots to aim at on targets even with very good paint jobs. Having a guaranteed spot to aim at on every target would save at least a second or two of looking through the scope to find one on each target, which could make a difference. It would make an even bigger difference when a spotter is used. Instead of "There's a little right to left wind. See that diamond-shaped light spot at 3 o'clock from the breast? Shoot at the right edge of that." it could be "Light right to left wind. Shoot the right edge of the R." I can't say that I really have a problem with which way the targets face as long as they're the same for everyone. One of my biggest issues is having the mental discipline to concentrate on the spot I want to hit, so it would actually help me to have letters facing me. Of course, I think it would actually be fun to have the direction the animals face alternate from one match to the next over the course of the tournament just to shake things up, too. I mostly just want the match to be fun for everyone, and arguments over small crap makes that not happen. It's not like anyone can get rich with smallbore silhouette anyway. The fun's really the only thing there for us. The day that I stop having fun is the day that you'll see my rifles up for sale.
