I've seen them face different ways at different places. There are some that are cast so that it's obvious that they are only made to face one way. Ours have welded feet that looks the same on both sides, so they can be used either way. I've got the parts to build a set of swingers for myself now and am just going to face them all to the left, as that's how they face at more than half of the matches that I shoot.

That is not so Jerry, a couple of shooters complained at Phoenix during the2005 SB Nationals saying that it was unfair that some of of the targets were placed with the letters and their tits towards the shooters, it was not fair because the good shooters could use those marks on the targets to aim at and Greg gave in and made the target setters change them so that we would only shoot at the flat part of the targets the way we are supposed to. I'll tell you that did not go well with the Phoenix shooters that for years had placed the cast targets the way you described facing them some times left or right without regards to letters and other things on them.

Those letters on the targets are specifically what I was referring to. I would love to have the letters across the middle of the target facing me during matches. Having built-in spots in the middle of the target to shoot at would be wonderful.

Tony that is correct. At the state match that was held here before the nats, the same two were complaining about which way the animals were faced, thus it is stated in the rule book now http://www.nrahq.org/compete/RuleBooks/ ... -r-w04.pdf.

Actually, this mess was created by ONE person during the member's meeting at 2003 Nationals at Ridgway.

Some ranges are resorting to grinding the letters and risers from the targets in order to point them in any direction.

While we are on the subject of what is rational vs. irrational lets consider the following.

1) I find it irrational that anyone would have a preference for which direction the animals are facing.

2) I find it rational that it would be preferrable to face the animal in a direction that it was intended to face and that the aiming side would be free from distracting letters, casting marks and other imperfections.

3) I find it disturbingly irrational that I would be "refunded my entry fees and invited off the range" if I simply requested that the NRA rules be followed as they relate to the question of animal placement (as pointed out above).

Silhouette is like flyfishing. Some are purists. They must make their own rod, flies and gear. Some SIlhouette shooters have become like these flyfisherman. Example: The Smallbore targets must be cast iron not steel, face in a certain direction, sit on sturdy rails not resettables pulled up with a string and so on. If the food and atmosphere at the Match is good I do not care about these things.

I will never take the effort to grind anything off of a target let alone 100's of them. I will take the time to true the bottom surface of the cast feet on my ancient slow belt speed 6 inch metal sander to make sure the animal can be placed on the rails or stands by the target setters without falling over easily. I wonder. Do those grinding "NRA Approved" off the targets feel some sense of satisfaction with all the rule "fidgeting" that has gone back and forth with the NRA competiton division over the years?

Others may have discovered something different but in the Northern hemisphere most of my cheap rimfire barrels are pushing the bullet to the right at the 77 and 100 meter distance. If the Turkey is facing toward 9 o'clock does that result in higher Turkey bank scores over a period of time due to the bullet more naturally wanting to strike into the tail of the Turkey?
