So my question remains unanswered; why do politicians persist in pushing anti-gun legislation?

Because people remain afraid, and it gets votes. Same reason some politicians work for an A rating from the NRA.

That may be the best explanation. Thoughtless people react to fear and politicians can fear monger to win votes. Must be what Obama had in mind when he tried to scare Democrats into voiting by referring to people who "cling to their guns and religion." Indicates he doesn't cling to religion nor likely the constitution.

In the rough & tumble of getting things done it seems like most Presidents, maybe all, begin thinking too much of themselves and lose sight of limits and The Constitution. The Constitution built in checks & balances against this, but it works badly when one party controls congress and the white house. God help us if one party ever controls congress, white house and the supreme court!

We do need the republicans to take back one house of congress, but that's two years out and they have some big internal battles to fight first. If the evangelical wing loses, or doesn't get the authority they want, we could see the split I wondered about originally. While many traditional Republicans are deeply religious, they may dislike the single mindedness of the evangelical agenda: It's easy to mimic their checklist, get their support and run for office no matter what's in your closet. It cost the gop a lot of credibility.

Yes, the GOP has to answer some hard questions to answer and I will agree that some of the evangelicals have too narrow for their own good, refusing to support anyone who didn't tow their entire line.

Now we have a government that is almost completely undercontrol of one party and led by a president elect who's voting record I disagree with. We shall see how he governs.

Isn't it interesting that some will elect a lib because the conservative isn't conservative enough?

Isn't it interesting that the media contiually questioned whether the evangelicals would vote for the charming conservative with the real world financial experience while semi promoting the center left republican who didn't differ enough for the conservatives and wasn't far enough left for the liberals?

I have no idea what this writers politics are, but the points are updates of the concerns that prompted this thread almost a year ago.
