It may tickle some of you to learn that I have been chastised (had me pee-pee whacked) at work for being politically incorrect. Twice. While writing up an incident in class, I referred to "the black students" because, well, it was, and I didn't have a roster in front of me at that moment. I was advised to refer to students by name, not as a group.

Then I was counseled for tapping students on the back of the head for being on Facebook during class, and required to apologize to a 15 year old girl that was "humiliated" by being disciplined. Should have refused, but the bank says we need the summer pay. Next year I'll take a real job at a convenience store.

Public school teachers now have my complete sympathy because they have no way to enforce discipline in their classrooms

Can't wait to get these kids in a college class so I can throw them out the first time they act out.

These are high school students taking college preparatory classes, and about a third of them don't belong in the program. That's the first and last time I let an administrator do that to me. Next time the answer is "No, I don't believe I'll do that." I've been paid to go away before, always because I can only eat so much shit.

The "incident" I wrote up was a near race riot sparked by a student reading a racist comment - on Facebook. Nobody in that class had written the comment or made the comment, but it was enough to upset several students and disrupt class. All I could do was contain it until things simmered down. This was the first time I've ever had five students act like I wasn't there until they bumped into to me - the chairs in that class are on casters and I crowded close behind them so they couldn't roll away from their computer desk and get up.

Malinois is hitting on the edges of something very important but that should not be ignored. When choosing a place to live the first thing to be checked on is what Law Enforcement is like in the area where you are going to live. My questions always are:
(1) What kind of shape are your LE folks in? Are they fat and flabby or do they look like iron pumpers who can out muscle 99% of the general population in a physical(no weapon) struggle? Do they stretch that shirt out to the max in the bicep and chest area? Do they have a haircut length that never needs to be combed?

(2) Where are they trained? Does the training academy stress physical fitness and tactics or does it stress being more of a social worker/counselor type who is just going to talk the criminal to death and do nothing else?

I will be moving soon from a city where the police get a call, 8 patrol cars zoom to the house with one officer in each car, knock on the door while on their cell phone with one hand to their ear, go in and then talk the wife beater, overdoser, pervert or other criminal into being "nice" and never doing "it" again or we will put you in jail. Then without charging them with anything, get another call, waddle out to their cars and zoom to the next call and do the same thing. These guys cannot survive 10 minutes at the Academy described in the following paragraph. So, their department sends them to another lesser Academy where social skills and paperwork are stressed more.

The rural area I am moving to is within ear shot of the firing lines of the best LE training academy in our state where physical fitness, survival skills in all kinds of situations and marksmanship are stressed. LE presence is constant and just the physical appearance of our county deputies are enough to prevent any resistance. Marines leaving active duty in their early 20's have stated that Paris Island was a cakewalk compared to what they went through at this LEO academy. To a person every graduate has spoken of successful completion of the training at this academy as one of their highest accomplishments.

Just something to think about that most realtors never mention when house shopping.

Bobby, our current Chief of Police was hired a couple of years ago and looks like a '50's refugee with his crewcut and BCD glasses, but not so long ago the city administrator (the former police chief) tried to fire him and before it was all over the city administrator, an assistant city administrator and I think two councilmen were out on their ass because the police officers and citizens revolted. Since then it has been a steady stream of disciplinary actions involving pudgy officers and officer misconduct - this guy is strict, cleaning house, and the field officers love him. It will take awhile longer to repair prior damage to the department, but he's made a lot of progress.

As for these students, parents, stay with your kids, love them, socialize them, and prepare them to be adults.

I think you hit the nail right on the head with that one. Most parents (and school systems & govts.) protect kids so much that they are being raised in a bubble and fail miserably when they hit the REAL world out there.
Accountability, respect for others, poverty, unfairness, .all new concepts to a large number of them... and, it's a bit of a shock when thay mouth off and someone beats the tar out of them.
I guess I'm working towards being "that guy" who stands on the front lawn waving my cane at the kids riding across the lawn.

And don't get me started on racial issues that appear out of nowhere and are meaningless, aaargh!! I work with a black guy, yes, black, not some other strange name made up of nationalities and colors. He's straight from Nigeria. I also work with guys from Trinidad, Pakistan, Ghana, Brunei, Hong Kong etc etc. All the colors of the rainbow. . We don't have any issues, probably because none of us try to claim special status.
