Republican Party Split?
There seems to be a fracture developing in the Republican party between traditional party members and the Evangelical wing as symbolized by Palin. Am I reading this wrong? Such a split is potentially disastrous, since neither group would have the strength to challenge the Democrats, unless the traditional Republican faction pulled toward center enough to attract moderate Democrats that aren't totally in love with the Obama/Biden wing.

In response to BB comment, due to unforseen circumstances I went to vote early on Saturday as I will not be available on the 4th. Six polling booths and all of them in operation, still had a 45 minute wait to get to the booth and it was raining fairly hard, and had been all night and no indication of a break in the rain.
Certainly a diverse group when it comes to age and race in the line but the overall opinion of the persons was that of what the press is feeding them, most had no thoughts or even questioned what in the country needs "change".
While I have read many things on both sides of the presidential race I again, repeat that we need to watch the congress much more closely, as when it comes to guns both sides are not great. On the econmic issues, again there is proof from their records that both sides "go with the flow" or do what is politically strategic for them at the time.
I have not missed an election since I registered to vote 20 + years ago, but this is probably the single most important election I have seen, yet there is so little to choose from, take the time to vote, and go with you gut feeling, not what the TV polls and press are pushing.

Doubtful that there will be a split in a major party. I hoped the Democrats would split back when the Republicans controlled all of Congress and the White House. I want either major party to head back toward the middle of the cultural spectrum instead of me having to vote for those who have jumped off the left end or right end. I'm actually more Libertarian leaning than Republican, but the Democrat nanny state is the polar opposite of my Libertarian leanings, so I almost always vote Republican.

Bob, most of us will not see a tax increase and the next president will have to deal with a record breaking deficit somehow. We'll all feel that sting no matter who's living in the White House.
Mary, I agree with everything you said (this time - don't let it go to your head
). Neither side can be trusted.
My initial thought was that a Republican party split would be a bad thing, but then I realized that if the result were moderate enough it would attract large numbers of moderate Democrats, relieved to have a choice, to create a viable political party.

American politics has devolved into nothing more than the acquisition of personal power. Both sides in congress are more interested in who appears to have won or lost a particular argument than the core issue that the argument was about in the first place.
As to the original question, what you are seeing is a revolt against the hijacking of the party that was perpetrated by the evangelicals. It makes no sense to turn the country over to the liberals just because the intelligent Republican candidates won't waste their time trying to overturn Roe v Wade. It's not going to happen. The abortion issue has been decided. Get over it and start paying attention to the real issues that threaten our future.
Guilliani or Romney would be doing far better at this point than McCain, but because the evangelicals rejected them in favor of the dufus that was willing to suck up to them, we're going to be stuck with Obama.

If you are talking about the lib republicans from back east, yes it is happening.
In my humble opinion, it is the "blue Blood" reps from back east that got the party in trouble in the first place. If you want a middle of the road dem, just vote for a dem.

Next year you will see the dems do what they always do. Raise taxes and take away our gun rights. They arn't going to let that little old SC ruling stop them.

Lib Republicans from back east? Explain please. From what I see there are two groups within the Republican party that may cause fractures: The Neo-Conservatives and the Evangelicals. They've been united until now, but that may not hold up under pressure and many Republicans don't fit easily in either category.
It is bad for the country to have one party controlling both houses of congress and the White House because it squelches debate. If the Republicans lose the White House, and the Democrats gain enough Senate seats to kill filibusters (right now the Senate is evenly divided between Democrats, and Republicans, 49 - 49 with 2 Independents that usually vote with the Democrats, and it takes a 2/3's, or 60, vote to kill filibusters) control is dangerously unbalanced. The Republican party would have two years to re-invent itself before the next elections, and a lot can happen in that time.

I guess you can explain why two different conservative groups have elected a liberal to be the canidate of the party.
He is for open borders, wrote the law that has killed free speech in elections, voted to increase the feds involvement in schools, and voted against tax cuts.
The only good thing I can say about him is he isn't as liberal as Obama.
How did conservatives of any flavor do this?

That won't sell guys; It's too conservative to gain enough support to accomplish anything. Any successful candidate is a compromise that doesn't completely satisfy anyone but that most folks in the party can tolerate. And it's actually an example of what brought on the original question: The McCain/Palin ticket is a pretty stark contrast that may actually predict an impending party split.

Fortunately, the Democrats didn't gain enough seats in the Senate to close filibuster so they still have to negotiate.
I don't know what happened to the Republican party, but they're way off message and now there are two years to figure out what went wrong and fix it. Hopefully they get back to pragmatic fiscal responsibility and MYOB (Mind Your Own Business).

My man Romney got beat out by a namby-pamby McCain. I did not like him in 2000 and cannot believe that he single-handedly fucked this up. I voted for Palin as she had more balls that McCain. If a Muslim and a Socialist can get elected, how can we not elect a Morman that forgot more than Mr Hussein Obama knows about the economy? I love the following quote-
"Guilliani or Romney would be doing far better at this point than McCain, but because the evangelicals rejected them in favor of the dufus that was willing to suck up to them, we're going to be stuck with Obama."
I will call Obama Mr. Obama as he is not qualified in my opinion to be President.
