scope alignment problem

Post by Dakota1 »

I mounted a Leupold 6.5x20x40mm EFR on to a CZ American using BKL 263 rings. I received the scope from Leupold mechanically centered. The paperwork showed that I had 22 MOA in upward travel. At the range I had to elevate 16 MOA to center the scope at 25 yards, which put me 7 inches low at 100 yards. I only have 6 MOA left, if the paperwork from Leupold is correct. I really don't want to work at the extreme of the scope travel. I do not have a torque driver, so I do not know what in/lb the screws were, but my thought is there really shouldn't be a 16 MOA adjustment out of the box. This is my first scope mounting, so where do I start trouble shooting.

Thanks in advance for any direction.

The clamp on the ring that holds it to the rifle pulls the scope down closer to the rifle as it is tightens. If the front clamp is not as tight as the rear, it'll point the scope up. If that's not the problem, look at their drop compensated risers.

Ring mounting.

I would first check to verify that the rings are seated fully on the dovetail, so that you can be sure that no misalignment is being caused there. If that doesn't work, you are probably going to need a different set of rings with some built in slope.

First, reverse the rings. This may solve your problem.

If not, you can get a sloped base from BKL. Or you can get rings with adjustable inserts (probably the easiest if reversing the rings does not work.

This problem isn't actually all that uncommon with CZs. One of my CZ 452 Varmints, for example, needs about the same amount of elevation adjustment to be centered at 40m as your say yours does at 25yds. That means that I had to use Burris Signature rings with offset inserts or some other scope mounting solution with built-in slope to mount scopes with little travel like the Elite 4200 series. I know you can get BKL mounts with 11 minutes of slope built-in. You can also use the Burris Signature rings, but they are very heavy (5.1oz, not counting inserts). You could also try contacting Marvin about one of his mounts with built-in slope. Your 452 American probably has the 3/8" 45 degree dovetail on it instead of the 11mm 60 degree dovetail that I think most Anschutz rifles has that I know Marvin makes mounts for. He'll know a lot more about it, though, so it would probably best to call or email him directly to ask about it if you're considering going with one of his mounts.

I did take the rings off and measured them with a caliper. They seemed to be identical, but I reversed them anyway (I did hear the reversal suggestion from a number of people). I will also adust how I tighten down the rings to the dovetail. I will tighten the front one first???

It doesn't matter which one you tighten first, just so you tighten them both all the way - before you put the scope in the rings.

Shim it. I put at least three soda can shims in the rear on every scope I mount.

I was told by a gunsmith that you couldn't / shouldn't shim the BKL rings. Is anyone else out there shimming their BKL rings?

SCOPE PROBLEM

Post by Evelio Mc Donald »

First mount the rings on the receiver but do not tighten them, next mount your scope, and tighten both rings that holds the scope, then tighten up the base to the action. And yes it is fairly common to shim the rear ring, a couple of pieces of a bussines card should be enough, it will not hurt the functioning or tracking of the scope.
Once the bases are tight on the action, you can release the rings holding the scope, and make whatever adjustments are required, and please do not use a torque wrench, just use the small allen wrench supplied with the rings, and use your fingers to tighten them. This is a 22LR rifle, and the recoil will not move the scope, and do not used the scope as a handle to pick up the rifle. I have seen it done.
Good luck.

Does the business card shim go between the ring and receiver?

SCOPE

Post by Evelio Mc Donald »

No, it goes between the bottom of the scope, and the rear ring, the object is to raise the back end of the scope.

Some use slices of aluminum cans instead of paper as well. I hear 3 soda can shims, and they're easy to cut with scissors.......

I jacked up my sightron using a few shims of pepsi can in BKL rings....It put a tiny dent in the tube. Never again will I shim in a ring only under it between the receiver. The rings I found to solve my issues on a 1712 were B-Square #10037 http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/acces ... ory_id=600
These things are awesome, they elevate on a center nut which actually pivots on the opposing windage screws. They only weighed about an ounce more than BKL 257's. I sent back a pair of Burris Sig Zee...they weighed almost 6 oz. Good luck
