Hello everyone, my name is Karl. I am a police officer of almost 30 years in southeast Texas. I have shot guns for as long as I can remember. I have shot benchrest and big bore long range. I am just now getting started in shooting small bore silhouette at my local range so I thought I would join this website and get some helpful information and make some new friends. I just picked me up a Anschutz Match 54 rifle. I need to get a good set of mount and rings (or just rings I guess) and a scope. I have some leupold mark 4 scopes (6.5 x 20 x 50mm) from my big bore rifles but im not sure if they are best to use do to the AO ranges. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Karl

Welcome to the addiction. Nothing wrong with the Leupolds, you may find the 50 mm a little difficult for good head position on smallbore. The object of knowing where to move your sights to for each distance lends to having a good finger adjustable system for scopes. Thus the popularity of the Leupolds Vari X III and VX's.
Weaver T series, and Sightrons Big Sky series.
As for mounts, BKL are the lightest commonly used, but Warne makes great rings. Personal preference and weight limitations are what controls this.
Sounds like you are starting off with good equipment, try several other shooters set ups and see what you like.

Karl, the basics are there with the set up you currently have, but don't be surprised if you end up buying all new gear for your new hobby. Shoot what you have for now and adjust your set up as you go along. Or you could just dive off the deep end and buy one of the Evelio built custom rifles with a Leupold FXIII on top. There is alot of good advice on this forum that wont steer you wrong. We love to get new shooters in the silhouette community so, tell all your friends and drag them to some matches with you.

You ought to go to Fort Worth and shoot the state smallbore match then you'll see and experience what everyone is shooting. That's how I got hooked. I looked up and down the shooting line at all the rifles and had a Viagra moment.
