Performace of New 2400 Powder

Has anyone had problems with newer lots of Aliant 2400 Powder? I use up an 8lb lot of late 1990s 2400 powder in .357 Rossi and my 1894 CL 32/20. My loads were tack drivers. All I changed was the new lots of 2400 powder one with the green label and the other newer one has the picture of the ram on the label. Impact at 100 dropped a foot and the groups went from less than 2" to more than 6" oval with the .357 and won't hold the ram with the 32/20. It was a good run while it lasted. I am using the same Hornady XTP bullets, same lot of primers and brass. I have upped the powder charges by two grains .5gr at a time but the accuracy just isn't there. Old loads were 10 gr for .357 and 8 for the 32/20.

I tried 2400 in my Marlin 32-20 with those bullets, also some Lasercast 115gr cast. Never could get it to shoot the way I wanted it to, switched over to Lil Gun and what a difference. Try 8 grains with the cast, 8.5 with the jacketed, I think you will be a happy camper. I tried every kind of load imaginable with my Rossi .357, finally found that 5 grains of Bullseye would shoot rings around anything else.

I had bought some 2400 last year to shoot 100 grain Hornadys out of my 32-20 and was shocked at how poor it shot. Went back to Unique ( 5.0 ) and it titened it rite back up again. We had A guy at our club that had some of the older stuff he had been using in his 32-20 and he had to switch to Bullsye because he could not get the new 2400 to shoot.

I bought eight, one lb. cannisters of Alliant 2400 about a month ago for my .32-20 Marlin. Anyone have any lot numbers on the powder that they feel is not performing up to previous standards? A can that I purchased last Nov. performed just fine.

The two lots of new powder are 767X021412 and 759Z040610 they perform the same, just not like the older Hercules powder. I had gotten spoiled with the older stuff. The only difference I can see visually is the new powder has a lot more graphite on it. With the older powder CCI 500 primers were the ticket now it doesn't seem to matter.

Did anybody chronograph the old loads and compare the new loads?

I would call Alliant to find out what was changed. Perhaps they changed the deterrent coating. A number of powder manufacturers have done that wit shotgun powders. As I recall it, 2400 was used in .410 loads and maybe even 28 ga., but it has been a very long time since I loaded shot shells.
