SB Rifle Recommendations

Guys and Gals,

Several friends into BPCR Silhouette are interested in shooting SB rifle silhouette. I've been out of the loop, so to speak, for about 10 years concerning top offerings for rifles. Based on my previous understanding going with a Sako Finfire or Anschutz 1700 series was the way to go back then if wanting an off-the-shelf, accurate SB rifle. Is that still so???

Accurate rifles are always in fashion. You don't see too many Sakos these days. But if you shoot this game long enough you end up with an Anschutz 17xx of some sort. Most use a 1712. Entry rifles tend to be CZ's, Remington 541, and 64 action Anschutz. Weatherby is dropping Anschutz 1416 barreled actions into their stock and labeling it the Mark XXII. The best entry level value has been the CZ. They require a trigger job or Timney replacement and are very accurate. The weatherby and Anschutz models have a good trigger, but accuracy doesn't measure up to the 17xx series like the CZs do. And with Remington you have to deal with the plastic magazine and an average trigger.

In the end, a shooter who sticks with the game will want a better fitting stock, top trigger, and great accuracy. So they buy a 1712.

As for Sako, a buddy of mine has one and occasionally shoots it in club match. It's very accurate, but the barrel is too light for my taste. The trigger is nice. And spare magazines cost $75/ea

I don't see many Ruger 10-22s show up at matches. They can be modified to shoot competitively with an investment that rivals the cost of a 1712. I've seen 10-22s shoot as accurately as a 1712. But you can't get the bolt actions lock time. A lot of guys on this forum will tell you there's no way a 10-22 can be competitive and will cite lack of accuracy and not accurate enough. That's now hogwash with Kidds excellent triggers and tha availability of aftermarket barrels. I see a properly configured 10-22 being a Clark barreled action with mid weight stainless barrel and Kidd 2-stage dropped into a Pharr or Woster stock being dang competitive for about $1600.

Thank you much for the insight. Like I said, I've been out-of-the loop for 10 years. I'll tell my buddies to go 1700 series or go home. They're a bunch of Docs, engineers and lawyers. Maybe I shouldn't be telling them anything, no???

By all means encourage their purchase of the finest so you can buy them at discounted prices when they're done with them!

Neal Stepp at ISS has the best prices right now. Look him up. He's in Fort Worth TX. I think he's selling barreled 1712 actions for $1100?? He'll send it to your gunsmith for fitting in a custom stock.

Champions Choice has barreled actions for $975 right now.

As much as I would love to have an Anschutz at $975 for just the barreled action I'll keep my CZ for quite some time.

Champions Choice no longer has any 1712 barreled actions. I bet the next ones they get in will be more than $975.

I was the lucky guy to get the last one. It will resurface the last weekend in April 2013.

no doubt not a lot of sakos anymore, finnfire havent been made for years...still great rifles and command a stout amout of cash for used. i love mine and would buy another if they were still made, 75 bucks for a plastic mag is crazy though. i am surprised midway or another company hasnt made a knock off.

That's the problem with the 10-22 is it's great for what it originally was intended to be. A fun good shooting semi with minute of squirrel accuracy. When you start dumping gobs of money into it you might as well leave it alone and get an Anchutz or a CZ.. at least you can sell the bolt guns for what you have in them...or more. Like my dad used to say..It's like putting a $40.00 saddle on a $10.00 horse. Dave Deo Vindice
