2012 Silhouette Lever Gun Rule Changes

Called Greg Connor today and he sent the 2012 rule changes from the silhouette committee meeting that have been formalized. Here they are just as printed by the NRA. These are being sent to all match directors.

1. Rear sights may be open, receiver, or tang sights, mounted as originally intended. No international or Olympic type sights, or extended mounts are permitted.

The front sight must be a post or bead or, if changeable inserts, may use a post or bead insert only.

A front sight antiglare tube, which may be no longer than 1 1/8" to include any attachments and no larger than a 3/4" outside diameter, may be used.

Fiber optic material may be used in or on the post or bead and may not be longer than its support blade and not to exceed 1 1/8" in length. In an anti-glare tube, the fiber optic material may not be any longer than the tube or extend outside the tube. The fiber optic sights do not need to be commerically manufactured.

2. Barrels must be original or may be relined. Original barrels rebored to a larger caliber are allowed. Any safe trigger is allowed. Stocks must be of original configuration. Recoil pads, replacement buttplates, and removable cheek pieces are allowed.

4. Firing period will include a 30 second ready (loading) period, and 2 minutes for 5 shots. Ammunition must be loaded through the tubular magazine. Ammunition may not be loaded directly into the chamber.

5. Binoculars may be used for spotting. Spotting scopes or stands may not be used. Clothing that adds stability to the shooting position is not allowed. Rule 6.9 concerning wind flags will not apply. Personal wind indicating devices are not allowed in the vicinity of the competitor.

Rule 1. Wording has been changed from "sights manufactured for the rifle they are mounted on" to "mounted as originally intended." Does this mean we can mount a Model 75 Redfield sight on a base attached to the rifle? Will call Greg for a clarification on this.

The front sight ruling for posts, beads, filament sights and diameter of antiglare tubes is straight forward and needs no clarification.

Rule 2. "removable cheekpieces are allowed" has been added.

The date for the 2012 National Silhouette Lever Gun Championships at the Whittington Center is July 10-13, with July 9 being the practice day.

I spoke with Greg Connor this morning about the new rear sight rule. Their interpretation of the new wording, "mounted as originally intended", is that any peep sight except an international or olympic type sight may be mounted on the receiver as long as the aperature is in front of the hammer. I think I have worded this as Greg said it. So, the Redfield 75 sight is legal.

Seems odd that a receiver sight has to have the aperture in front of the hammer yet tang sights are obviously behind the hammer. Go figure. Ah well, you still have to break and follow through on the animal!

I guess that is why they came up with "mounted as originally intended." Which in my view is better than the wording it replaced. "sights manufactured for the rifle they are mounted on"
