Sightron Scope Settings

I just purchased a Sightron SII Big Sky 6-24x42 Sil scope (should have it in a couple of days) and was wondering if any of the silhouette shooters who use this scope could help me out. After I get this sighted in for 40 meters, what are the elevation adjustments that you're using for the various silhouette ranges ? I'm hoping to take some of the guess-work out and start with a good baseline that I can then refine for my particular weapon and ammunition. Thanks in advance for the help.

I have one mounted on two silhouette rifles, an Anschutz 54:18 and a Sako P94S. With a 40 meter "0", I'm at 8, 18, & 32 clicks with the Annie, 8, 20, & 32 clicks with the Sako, so both are essentially 2", 4.5-5", 8" at 60, 77, 100 meters, respectively. Its a great scope for the money. I also have one mounted on my match rifle and air rifle...

Thanks Topclass. I'll be shooting a Ruger 10 22; the ammo I haven't figured out yet but I have a good supply of several brands of match ammo to try out. I've heard alot of good things about this scope and I'm anxious to get it and try it out. BTW, what type and height rings are you using to mount the scope ?

Always assume that scope settings are unique to each rifle and each lot of ammunition - just one reason that some shooters will buy a case of ammunition their rifle likes.

I agree whole heartedly; but if I can get a few settings for the scope it should get me in the ballpark so I can dial it in easier. As far as the ammo goes, I still have to find out which type my rifle likes, then I can lay in a good supply. Thanks for the advice; I'm taking it all in to help simplify things for me.

I have tall BKL rings on both rifles -- tall rings keep my head more upright and less neck strain. The 42mm objective is fairly small so tall rings aren't necessary for bell clearance. BKL's ar relatively inexpensive and are made in th USA. I've ordered directly from the company off their website. Shipping is pretty quick, too.

To get you in the ballpark, a rough set of guidelines is as follows:

1. Set your turrets to Zero elevation at 40M
2. at 60M, start with 2 minutes of elevation & fine-tune from there
3. at 77M, start with 4.5 minutes of elevation & fine-tune from there
4. at 100M, start with 8.5 minutes of elevation & fine-tune from there.

Note - some people count clicks, others use the values printed on their turrets.

Those settings will at least get you close, and with that scope you should be able to see the bullet holes on paper at every distance. It won't take you very long to get your final settings for your home range. Most shooters will keep a little notebook with their settings for various ranges and in various weather conditions.

keep in mind that the 10-22 likes a little extra velocity to keep it cycling . i find auto match or another 1200 fps 40g will work well. the most accurate ammo in your gun will not be worth a hoot if you are spening too much time with feed/ejection issues.

The brand of scope don't matter. Scope height and ammo velocity are the two factors. Assuming you are using 'target ammo and your scope is 1 1/2 or a little higher;

chickens = 0
pigs = 2 give or take a couple clicks
turkeys = 4 give or take a couple clicks
rams somewhere around 8 or 9

All numbers are in MOA from the chicken setting.

Thanks for all the advice; I can't wait until I get the scope, set it up and start shooting. Dave, I have a good variety of ammo that I can use to evaulate both accuracy and feed / ejection; both standard and high velocity. Steve, I have an small binder style noetbook I used to use for IMHSA, but I'll adapt it for the smallbore silhouette so I can keep track of all the particulars.

Mike, I use to shoot a 10-22 in hunter class. I shot Eley target ammo with a velocity under 1100. I did get a few to 'stove pipe' when I let the action get too dirty. Other than that, I had no problems with the gun. 21/2 minutes for 5 shots gives you plenty of time to mess with the rifle, just keep your cool while doing it. Don't panic.

I just received the scope the day before yesterday and mounted it yesterday. I haven't had a chance yet to take it to the range and sight it in. I had an IDPA match today, so I hoping to get out tomorrow if its not raining. I'll post info about it after I test it out. My overall impression of the scope is that the glass is very clear, and I have plenty of eye relief ( I wear glasses so it was an initial concern when I was looking at which scope to purchase). I mounted the scope with high rings and I have to agree with a couple other people that it keeps my head straighter and thus makes it more comfortable to look through. Now I just need to get some time behind the scope and on the range.

Thanks for the info about the 10 22. I have a bull barrel on mine, so I won't be able to shoot hunter class. You said you used to shoot the 10 22 in hunter, what rifle are you using now and are you still shooting in hunter ? I usually keep my guns very clean, but your heads-up concerning the possible stove pipes will be a good reminder for me to keep them clean.
