different ammo for different animals.....
I can't afford Eley Tenex (not too many of us can), but I won a brick of it as a door prize at a CBC several years ago, and I've taken to shooting Wolf Target at chickens and pigs, and the Eley red box at turkeys and rams..... Seems to work for me, and cuts my ammo costs by perhaps a third. Anybody else do this? Comments?

For some lucky reason my $4000 rifle will shoot 5 shot tiny little knots out to the pigs with CCI SV, then I roll with the Eley. Ask Baby Huey, he did it today under adult supervision.

Quite a few shooters do use better ammo at the futher distances, Turkeys/ Rams. However, you may want to check compatability with different lubes on the ammo. Some lubes mix well, some do not. 1 or 2 flyers may lose you a match. check this on paper.

Shoot the cheap stuff on animals you don't mind missing. Kidding aside you will get to a point match place in your classification is determined by one or two targets, then they all count the same. It's not the average group size that makes cheap ammo a poor choice, it's the flyers out of group. Flyers miss chickens just as sure as turkeys.

OO, as a supporter of two shooters I understand what you are saying when it comes to cost of ammo...my fix, depending on the importance of the match, as boats says, a flier can miss a chicken as easy as a pig or turkey. Bigger matches (states, regionals or natty's) I use higher grade ammo across the match, local or club events, use a cheaper ammo.

1 chicken = 1 Ram All my shots are worth the same to me. Why shoot to a lower standard for chickens and pigs. If you can hit them 10 for 10 go for it. I need the Chickens and Pigs. I need all the help I can get.
Hammy, stop counting them pennies. Drink one less adult beverage after the match when we are kicked back discussing how we can miss them easy piggies.
I know one thing. Smallbore is a bargain now that I have experienced HighPower. You would spend more just for drinking Gatorade just setting up the targets before the HighPower match.

Re: different ammo for different animals.....
CCI SV shoots and chambers well in all my Factory barrelled Rifles. Need to test again with CCI SV at 100 meters in those rifles. In my rifle with the Lilja Tite Bore the headspace will not allow chambering CCI SV without extreme force on the bolt. My son will not put anything but Lapua or Eley through his Tumbleweeds Rifle. So we do not know if that rifle will chamber CCI SV or not. I know of one person with a custom barrelled rifle that is shooting CCI without difficult bolt closing. It would be nice to practice at home with CCI in my main Match rifle. CCI is by far the cheapest SV Match ammo on the market now that is not super messy. I would be interested in hearing the experiences of other folks with Custom Barrelled rifles and how much force is required to chamber CCI SV ammo?
Thanks,

Bobby, the CCI chambers fine in my Lilja. And JP, don't you remember part of my pre match prep is putting Eley black in Remington Thunderbolt boxes?

Coats is right. All animals count the same and a minute at the chickens is the same as a minute at the turkeys.

Re: different ammo for different animals.....
I'll back ham up one this one! CCI in HIS rifle shoots just aswell as his other good ammos. Where the CCI ammo gets a little funny is when it has to fly past the pigs. Taking a guess on this one but if you look at a CCI round then look at an SK, Wolf, Lapua, or Eley round, they just look a little more rugged and less aerodynamic than the other 4brands. Also, the loads in CCI likey are not as precisely measured out at that of you higher brands. Also, certain types of powder are better than others. But at the close ranges of the chickens and pigs if you gun can shoot good with it use it. A perfect example of how good this stuff shoots out of Ham's rifle was Jacksonville when he shot 10 in a row on the chickens with CCI standard velocity. This was also, the first strand of the day, so there was no lube in the barrel from other bullets either. In conclusion,hambone49 wrote:Bobby, the CCI chambers fine in my Lilja. Re: different ammo for different animals.....
Well, I guess I just assumed that better ammo would be better at longer distances, and the relatively cheaper ammo (Wolf, CCI) would not "screw up" as much at shorter ranges...... still think that might be the case, although I have no evidence to support it. If anybody has any tricks to lower ammo costs I would appreciate knowing them.... being the retired old dude that I am, I'm already restricted to practicing mostly indoors with an air rifle and scope ($8 per 500 Crossman Premier pellets beat the hell outa -- what? -- $120 for 500 Eley Red.). There's also dry firing and holding practice, but that's kind of like kissing your sister! Lol, boring...... I know it works, but, sure would like to shoot more.
What about sorting cheaper ammo by weight, like Gary M does at Pe Ell, or by rim thickness gauges.....anybody here do any of that?

OO...on the weight/rim thickness sorting seen it done by none other than Crackers (Utah) and don't know that he gained that much from it, but then he is a master class shooter. Jerry G any thoughts on that?

Have you tried Lapua Center-X .22LR Match Ammunition? The cost is about $90 a 500. I am very impressed with this ammo. Here is a picture of a target shot by jjp in Winnsboro through the Lapua targeting machine with a stock barrel 1710 at 100 meters. This was shot from a box that Kitty pulled out of his vest. This was not cherry picked ammo that Lapua supplied.

point of impact?
Folks
I have never seen two different loads that had "exactly" the same point of impact. I'd say that any decrease in group size gained by using better ammo would be more than offset by the probability that there would be a shift in point of impact. I suppose that you could deal with this when sighting in, but it would likely require not just adjusting elevation, but windage as well for each animal. Would get complicated, and I don't like complicated during a match.
Fortunately my 1712 shoots Wolf Match Target into about 1.5" or less on rams, so I'm not missing any shots due to accuracy problems. Missing plenty, but not because of the gun or ammo.
My two cents,
