Pharr, Wooster, Nesika Bay Comparisons

These three stocks have become state of the art for most SIlhouette shooters. I have not been able to shoot or hold a Wooster stock. My son and I have held and shot every model of the Pharr and one of B.Cloninger's Nesika Bays. The Nesika Bay stock did not have the feel we were looking for. The Pharr RT/S felt much more natural to us. This is just a personal preference. The Nesika Bay may fit some other people better than the Pharrs. I have shot a McMillan stocked 1712 for years. I have shot a lot of matchs at Winnsboro: monthlies and Southern Nationals. The McMillan stock feels great to me at home and at every range but Winnsboro. At Winnsboro for some reason my Mcmillan always feels too small, not enough cheek pressure or length of pull.

There was a 5418 Hunter that just sold in the Marketplace forum that I would have jumped on immediately if I knew what the Wooster stock felt like.

The following question is not about which stock or stock design is better. (So, nobody take this thread in that direction. All three of these stocks are high quality and state of the art. Stocks are about how they work with your position, body size and type.)

How does the Wooster stocks feel in comparison to the Nesika Bays and the Pharrs? Does it feel more like a Nesika Bay or a Pharr or is it totally a different feel? Can it be split fingered? Is the Wooster wood or composite? There are no locals shooting a Wooster stock in my area yet.

I hope that I can get to a large enough Match in 2011 to actually hold or shoot a Wooster stocked rifle so that I can make an informed decision when I purchase or have the next rifle built.

Show up at the Conard Bernhardt Cup and you'll be able to hold (and probably shoot if you want) at least a couple dozen Wooster stocked rifles.

Bobby, there are a few Woosters that will be in WInny, and I know jjp will have his new stocks at Jacksonville in March for the Sunshine classic. Is suspect you will like it, not sure about Joel though with his longer neck. Of course if you show up at the CBC in April you will have your choice of Woosters to hold.

Their is only a couple of differences betweeen mine and the Robertson/ Pharr stock. The pharr has a smaller pistol grip with a palm swell. Mine is a little bigger and no palm swell. Mine has a different monte carlo roll, its more slope to the off side and a slant to let recoil slide by. Both stocks can be split finger shoot. The nesika stock was built by me as well. It was a more of a standard hunter style stock. It has a 2" longer forearm, and is 1/4'' shallower in the magazine well and the comb is lower than my new stock. Pistol grip is about the same. Hope this answers any questions.

Steve, I appreciate that detailed reply. Your reply shows that a lot of thought went into the development of your stock. We will make a B-line to the first one of your stocks we see at a match to see how it fits us. My son and I are radically different in neck length, arm length, size, height and even hand size. If your stock fits both or one of us better than what we have we will be contacting you. Joel was growing so fast I could never keep him in a stock more than a few months until he was around age 18. Then we could finally put him in a better quality rifle.

Joe Rodriguez has one of Steve's stock on his smallbore rifle (it may not be the latest version though) which I shot at the state match in Austin a couple of years ago. (I picked up the wrong gun case and a .243 Win couldn't pass tech...go figure! Joe kindly let me shoot his.) The belly of the stock through the magazine area seemed to be more or less parallel to the bore line and was really pretty nice. I do not know whether the depth is close to the max allowable unless you bed the receiver a little higher than the centerline of the bore and receiver which some other stocks benefit from. The cheek piece felt surprisingly good as I have to be very careful to get much cheek pressure with my Nesika stocked high power rifle because of the shape of my face. As Steve was describing it, the cheek piece is not as squared off as the Pharr RTS is.

You might talk with Steve some about having an adjustable length of pull for the stock. Some of the shooters up his way have some very clever and practical ideas as the LOP needs to be changed depending upon how much clothing they need to wear to keep from freezing. It is a very well thought out stock, but is a matter of what fits you.

I have shot a few of Woosters stocks including El Puma's (Jose R) and I prefer them over the older version of Woosters Nesika, he continues to improve on the design. Pharr's versions don't give me the same cheek weld, but are still great for some people.
