Standard Rifle barrel regs

Could someone please summarize the regulations concerning barrel dimensions for standard rifle? Minimum length, taper, tuners, bloop tubes, etc.? I have had a rule booklet on order from the NRA since March, so I am uncertain as to acceptable dimensions.

I am trying to reconfigure a Winchester 52 C Standard Rifle into a silhouette rifle. It currently has a 22" barrel that tapers from .875 to .75, weight is just over 8 lbs with a Leupold 6.5x20 and aluminum rings and risers. It is setting in a Wayne Merrier synthetic stock. The stock is so light and the barrel so heavy that balance is not right, I still shoot my old Anshcutz 54 Sporter better. So... I had thought to conduct a weight / balance test by shortening the barrel to 17" and adding lead to the forearm to achieve proper balance. Would this be permissible? I have seen 16" barreled CZ Scouts on the line, so I would think it would be ok but I want to make sure before I whack the barrel off.

Hi Rex, there are no regs as far as barrel contour for standard class, just length, I think 30 inches total incl bloop, etc.. The main reg is weight and you are well under that. I would add some weight to that butt before I whack off that barrel...

As Hambone stated, anything on the barrel is legal, any contour, bloop tubes, extra weight etc. as long as it is not over 30" long. Adding weight on the fore end of the stock will make it even more muzzle heavy. You need to remove the butt pad, and add about 1 1/2 pounds of weight inside of the stock, and replace the pad, it should balance it. Don't cut any more off the barrel, it is already too short.

Thanks for the help guys. I had thought of adding weight to the butt, but I think the pad is glued on and I am afraid that if I remove it I will destroy both the pad and the buttstock in the process. So I am not sure what to do.

Butplate pads are cheep so don't worry about destroying one. Go to the dollar store and pick up a pair of flip-flops and you will have 2 for a buck. They grab your shooting vest real well and don't weigh anything.

I actually think Wayne uses flip flop's originally. Its not so much the pad itself I am worried about, more that the action of removing it may also destroy the soft construction of the butt stock.

Not sure what to do with this rifle, I want to use it but balance is not right. It does not help that I now have 3000$ in it and I out shoot it with much less expensive rifles.

You would think I would learn my lesson. This is my third custom rifle and they have all been disappointing. Buy Anschutz!

But do you outshoot it with YOUR cheaper rifles?
Shooting someone else's gun is strange, so you concentrate on fundamentals you gloss over with your regular gun.
I have a friend who has bought a number of $2000 shotguns because of this. He still can't hit squat.

Oh yeah, I outshoot it with two different rifles. One is my old Savage Anschutz 54 Sporter, its my squirrel gun and has lots of miles. The other was a CZ American 22 LR. I had to sell the dawg gone CZ 'cause it was embarrassing to be able to hit more with the cheap gun than the custom stocked rifle
