current weatherby xxii vs various rem 541's

Post by 308 »

Always looking for a sil rifle that I can shoot in both classes that will get me by til I can aspire to a annie 1712.

What are the pros and cons of the Rem 541,the t and the older s vs.the current weatherby XXII. I know the weatherby is made by anschutz and has the 64 action.
Will the weatherby accept a 2 stage trigger like you can get on the 1712?

For what the Remingtons are selling for you can just about get the weatherby.

I guess what I'm asking is if you were going to buy one of these rifles and they were priced about the same, which would you get and why. Enquireing minds want to know: JS aka 308

Both are winners.

The 541 action locks up like a bank vault and the trigger is great. Mine was worked over by an unknown pro in a former life and, when adequately fouled, will easily shoot bug holes at 40 meters. They're great rifles with an earned reputation.

Weatherby put a perfect stock on the XXII in appearance and function. It shoulders perfectly and looks, well, it's a Weatherby - 'nuff said. There's nothing wrong with the Anschutz 64 action and together with the Weatherby stock they're a great value.

Now, if you could just get the 541 action in the Weatherby stock...

308,

I'd have to agree with my friend Blau. The 541S that I have shoots like a house of fire. I just wasn't willing to hack the stock to add the pund of weight it was giving up to the class limit. I bought a 581 and had Marv Pearson transform it. That was like sending away the ugly duckling and getting back a supermodel!

I've shot and like the Anschutz/Weatherby XXII. It too gives up some weight to the rules but it certainly is good enough for silhouette. It would be an equivalent replacement for a Rem 541 with better parts availability. I wouldn't hesitate on that.

If it's 541s you're commited to I'd look for a 541T Heavy Barrel. Magazines are not easy to find though.

Too true! Place a back order with Midway for Apache 77 6 round clips and just wait. They fit fine, but they're always back ordered.

I bought some magazines over the internet. They showed 5 round magazines in the photo but shipped 10 round magazines. Great, now I have two ten round magazines! Maybe I can get the match director to let me load 10 at a time!

Return 'em and ask for your shipping back.

We could remove the magazine housing from 308's Weatherby. Drill and tap it for a 541 magazine guide and latch and then he could buy the parts. That way he wouldn't have to rely on those expensive Anschutz magazines!

I have owned/own 3 different 1416/164 (same gun functionally as XXII) and 2 different 541s. It has been my experience that the 541 was/is more accurate. Not hugely so as the Anschutz is still an Anschutz.

One important advantage the Anschutz 64 action does have is the ability to remove the forward portion of the the firing pin very easily. Remove bolt from action. Rotate the forward portion of the bolt until it can slide off. With the forward portion the firing pin seperates and comes out. DON'T loose it of course as it is a PIA to get a replacement.

Reassemble, then you can dry fire to your hearts content. Dry fire a 541/581 much at all and the face of the barrel shows a deep dent quick.

IMHO the 1416/146 is a more durable gun with parts available. Extra clips can be had fairly cheaply with minor modifications to the Savage replacement. Otherwise a "Anscuhtz" clip is $50+/-.

Clips are the single biggest detraction for 541's. The plastic clip is cheap and hokey. Often feeding a a bit sluggish and pickey. If someone could get the Anschutz/Savage cp arrangement to work on the 541's then we'd have a beautiful thing.

Most often a good used 541 is less $$ than the the similar used 1416/164, not hugely but still less. Used 541 versus new 1416/XXII and your are looking a most of the way to a great scope in $$ difference (or case of acceptable ammo).

Having said all that at this time I own a 541 but no 1416/164/XXII. Got a soft spot for the 541's.

Pete A. and everyone else who responded, thanks a lot.
I should probably put this in a different post and will if I need to but to those of you who have had the remington 541 rifles.

Have you any significant reasons why or why not that you would search for a s version over the newer t.

I had a 541t sporter years ago and done my sill shootng with it, sure wish I still had it. I'm just wondering if I should hold out for a 541s version when I go to buy another. Whats your opinion on it???

308 & Shakes;

I have a 541T now and had a 541S (which I should never have traded away). Both shot and functioned great. I think I now have a better feel for accuracy than when I owned the "S" as then I was really just a hunter plinker but the "S" superbly accurate. Even there T vs S.

I have always leaned to softer satin finishes and did not like the high gloss and pressed in engraving of the "S". I also did not like the 3/8" groove for 22 type rings that thr "S" has. So for totally no factual personal opinnion only I like the T more. However among 541 fanatics that can be considered treason as the "S" is often considerd to be the "best".

Shakes, I bet you a box of Aquila that the $795 was either still at the gun show ome closing time or the owner dropped the price dramatically to sell. Maybe not like new in the box but darn fine 541's can be had for $400-450+/-for the careful shopper. "S" runs a bit more used than the "T".

I carry mine to Silhouette range but it is really set for hunting (3-9x AO Leupold Rimfire and cool Stoney Point elevation knob).

This easy.

Get the Weatherby for all the right shooter's reasons -
1. the magazine fits nearly flush with the bottom of the rifle. the 541 mag sticks out considerable.
2. you can buy the 2 stage 1712 trigger and bolt it on. Its an easy swap. But why? Trade up to 1712 when you're ready for the 2 stage.
3. the stock is the right shape for offhand shooting. the 541 is not.
4. the weatherby weighs more than S.

Sure, the 541S is more accurate. But I've seen a couple of Weatherbys on the line and they're accurate enough. And good luck finding 541S. At best you'll see a few on gunbroker.
