Starting a Small bore Silhouette Group

What do I need to know about Starting a Small bore Silhouette Group?
What type of support does the NRA give to a NRA smallbore silhouette groups? are there other places that support Smallbore silhouette?

bjd....we shoot SB at Aurora tommorrow, Sun. 25th 10am. Supposed to be sunny and in the low 50's. Come join us. Our "group" are the same bunch that shot at Buffalo Creek. Are you thinking of starting up SB silhouette there again? Come on down, we can help you with all your questions. (bring your rifle)......Bob M.

COFA (Christian Outdoor Fellowship of America) is going to start a Smallbore Silhouette clinic up in the Bailey/Conifer area first six times out will be to teach and then to see if we can generated the people needed to have matches, Bailey Mountain Cats 4-H Shooting Sports Group is also interested in it. We do not know if we can use the Buffalo Creek range yet its in the works.
We are also working on use of other sites up in the Bailey/ Conifer area.
We are looking for all the support we can get.

If you are going to have a bunch of none silhouette shooters there, you might want to put out some pistol targets to let them shoot at with their rifles. They are a little larger and might keep their interest. A club in MT uses the pistol targets for the new shooters and it isn't long before they want to shoot at the 1/5 targets we use.

Several SB Sillywet clubs north and south of me but a bit far given some local constraints.

I'd consider getting something started at the local range if I had some more info...

We shoot full rifle and pistol sillouette matches every third saturday of the month at Hollywood Rifle and Pistol Club. Come on down, it"s 85degrees today! HRPclub.com.

TBone, Like to shoot pistol agian, but a little far from Jac, Fl for a one day match. Do you hold a State match for pistol??? I would like to invite you and yuor shooting buddies to come to the Sunshine Classic next year. It is a 2 day registared match. Match fee's are $100.00 but that includes match fees, dinner Friday night, Lunch Sat. & Sun. We also give away some really nice door prizes which consist of a Kowa spotting, Rifle from CZ varouis knives form Spyderco, Buck, and other various prizes. Since no one has answered bjd regarding support form the NRA, I willl answer. You will get NO support of any kind from the NRA, but many local clubs and match directors will be more than happy to help you.

Bobby Huddleston in Jackson, Mississippi would probably be the most help as he started up last year.

how far is Canon City from you. I have seen pictures of a Silhouette range on the Royal Gorge Gun Club website

I do not know if they are shooting many matches. I would be interested going there possibly as I am in Colorado Springs. Especially if they had matches on Saturday.

bjd, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about starting Smallbore Silhouette Matchs since I am probably the newest Silhouette Match Director conducting only our second season of matchs in 2008. Magnolia Rifle and Pistol Club in Jackson, MS. where our matchs are conducted provided the funds for our targets from Ray Schafer and our steel rails. Our rails were designed by Magnolia's Treasurer who is also an engineer. Our rails look very simple at ground level but have a very effective vibration dampening system under ground. I took the drawings for the rails to our area's largest industrial steel supplier/fabricator and had them build the rails. Our club also put a ton of money into dirt work for Smallbore Silhouette. We only had a 100 yard berm on the Smallbore section of our range so the club agreed for the 100 yard berm to be moved out to 100 meters and three additional berms be installed for chickens, pigs and rams. I picked up the completed rails up and painted them. Because there was not a Silhouette group at our range, a bunch of combat pistol guys(IPSC) and dedicated club members came out and devoted a Saturday to installing the rails in the ground even though they did not have any personal interest in Smallbore SIlhouette. Magnolia Rifle and Pistol Club in return receives $3 out of the $10 entry fee to help reimburse some of the running club costs. The biggest problem I have had is trying to cut the grass and tidy up the range on Thursdays and Fridays before Match day because our range is a multi-purpose range with members shooting anything imaginable on the days I need to cut grass. The paperwork with the NRA is a breeze for Approved Monthly matchs. The NRA demands no money for Approved matchs. The NRA does receive all the money for the scorebooks you sell.
When I told my wife that I needed help on match days with collecting entry fees, squadding, putting the scores in the scorebooks and other tasks, she was really worried that it would be like the other(mainly youth)sports we had volunteered to run in the past that had driven us crazy with bad behavior. After the first couple of matchs, my wife said that the Smallbore Silhouette Competitors are a very different group from the general public in the way they conduct themselves and that she really enjoyed helping run the matchs because everyone got along so well and there were no altercations like other sports. She is actually looking forward to the 2008 season.
A few things that you might need are: clipboards, a squadding or grid form, scorecards, something like a journal or notebook to record scores in the different classes, possibly prizes like blue ribbons or a little cash, cash to make change for entry fees, 5 and 10 in a row pins. The NRA will provide you with match reporting forms and grand slam forms. I drew my own squadding form based on Coast Rifle and Pistol Club's example. I also use Coast Rifle and Pistol Club's scorecards which I simply make copies of. I use a briefcase to carry all the paperwork, pins and clipboards. I do not provide competitors with clipboards or pencils because they know they are going to need these things at every match and most prefer their own clipboards anyway. If your club does not have vertical rifle racks, you will need to build some of those also.
The main thing that helped me organize the matchs was that my son and I had been travelling to many different ranges for six years before our home range approached me about starting matchs locally. When you shoot a lot of different places, you wind up pitching in to help at the matchs and learning all the different tasks that are needed to run an efficient match.
