Post by DavidABQ »

For those individuals who are attending the National Silhouette competitions at the NRA Whittington Center here are the 5 major food groups in New Mexico.

Do you know a good place to eat in Raton Dave? Somewhere with authentic New Mexico Quisine? One that has all 5 major food groups on the menu?

Sorry.
I've discovered what is "real Mexican food" by one person's standards is considered either fast food, TexMex, or "what a dump!" by the next person...
So expressing opinions about GOOD Mexican Food usually results in fairly polarized/differing views about the same place. Even the subject of salsas (watery versus thick, tomatoey versus heavy in peppers, green versus red, etc)... It's no wonder every Mexican resturant everywhere has reviews on both extreme ends of the ratings.

However... IMHO, the best Mexican food near Raton requires a short trip north to Trinidad...

Tequilas Family resturant (who has the most diverse menu) is a place I'll visit at least once every trip to NRAWC. Good food, easy to get to location, reasonably fast service and decent prices.

Another in Trinidad, that local's seem to like is Habanero's Mexican Grill... its a little harder to find, and I've not had a chance to try, but I'd like to give it a visit.

He doesn't do Mexican food, but IMO, No trip to NRAWC is complete without at least one trip to Colfax Tavern. Cold beer, fantastic burgers and pizza, and nightly food specials that you better arrive early for before the locals get it all.... Turn right out of the gate at NRAWC, drive west on 64 about 20 minutes until you see It on the left at the 505 intersection. Typical local pub "everybody knows everyone" atmosphere, and you'll likely run into several of the NRAWC competitors or staff already there when you arrive.

JUST MY .02,

You are correct Tim. We 52nd to think of our Mexican food as New Mexican food. It has to do with the influence of the pueblos on the food like blue corn.

G'day folks
Don't know if I'm supposed to tell but we had a meal at "The Sands" in Raton our last night in town last year and it was pretty darned good.
I don't know if it was authentic " New Mexican" cuisine, but it sure was spicy on our Aussie tongues!!! Waitress wasn't real good at understanding our Aussie english, then again, neither were a lot of Texans! ;) ;)

See y'all soon.

That's funny Taps. You guys need to learn English. HA!

The best Mexican food in Raton that I have found is in a little house across from the old school. It is called 'La Cocina" The Kitchen.

I think so Dave. It is close to the underpass right across from a school. It is west of the main drag. Most of the time I go by there it is closed. I haven't figured out their schedule yet, if they have one.
