Bedding and floating question

Post by Dakota1 »

I have a CZ that I want to bed. What is the concensus on bedding and floating. I have been told, on a pencil barrel to bed the barrel also, and not float anything.

Opinions?

CZ's I've owned benefited greatly from floating the barrel and pillar bedding.

If it has a wood stock, bed the action at the two screw points. It does not need to be pillar bedded. Then take out lots of wood from around the barrel and seal the wood so moisture can't get in.

If it is a synthetic stock, just bed it at the two screw points and make sure nothing is touching the barrel.

That, a trigger job, and you'll have a good silhouette rifle. Just remember it is a tool to make you shoot better scores, not a work of art to be hung on the wall.

Take this as "Your mileage may vary" advice.

Pillar bedding has always given me good results in CZ Americans, Silhouettes and Varmints and This Method is really good instruction from someone that knows way more than me, and This One has good CZ specific instructions.

Additional suggestions are to wrap the CZ recoil lug in a singe layer of electrical tape for bedding to create a small gap. When the tape is removed there's a surprisingly small gap between lug and bedding, but just enough to let action and stock separate easily. Go ahead and use lamp ferrules for pillars because standard center fire aluminum pillars are too big for a rimfire stock, but open up the action bolt holes in the stock enough to let the pillars slip in and out. Epoxy will fill the gaps nicely and the threads on the ferrules make for real good grip.

Epoxy bedding compound adheres poorly to synthetic stocks but the fit between a synthetic stock and the action is already pretty close. Just use enough epoxy to set the pillars and let the rest go.

Float the barrel, but the forearm of a Silhouette stock is pretty floppy without the barrel supporting it, so check it regularly to make sure it isn't touching. I finally gave up and added a pressure ridge about an inch back from the end of the forearm to keep it under control.

I had the action pillar bedded, and the barrel floated. I just got it back yesterday, and will not get to shoot it until Saturday. ...the week is dragging.

Gonna try it out at Rio's match Sat? I'm gonna try to make it there.....

Can I ask who you had do the work that had a 48hr turnaround locally?

BTW-I had to bed the barrel lug on my Silhouette to keep it from hitting the stock. I didn't pillar mine, just bedded barrel and lug from front of receiver up to about an inch ahead of the barrel lug (including the lug, wich I affixed to the barrel with a set screw). the receiver is snug as a bug in the stock as it is.........
