Cold Barrel Shot

Post by Jerry G »

My rifle seems to throw the first shot from a cold barrel. It is always to the left and then the group moves to center with the rest of the string. I am going to do some more testing on that and clean barrel shots this week to see how much it affects the groups. From my first tests it looks like it is enough to miss a chicken or turkey with a questionable center hold.

What kind of rifle, Jerry? Some won't shoot at all well until they're - by my standards - really nasty.

It's a 1713 in a Pharr stock. I never tested it before but I think it did it in the original stock too.

This evening, my 1712 showed its' wild side for the first three rounds after cleaning. After that, it settled back down to one hole groups. Does your 1710 just throw a wild one from a clean barrel, or any time the barrel is cold?

The old "cold barrel syndrome". You said cold not cleaned. We found this 20 years ago mainly with Fiocchi ammo but have seen with other brands also. After shooting ten shots try one dry patch down the barrel, let it cool an hour of so like between relays then try your first shot and see what happens. That always helped.
