Blue Prints for target stands and backstops?

Our club currently has portable stands with built in back stops that we set up on and take down on match days. We are looking to put in new permanent berms and some new target stands that are removable so they won't get shot up. I've got a few ideas on how to do this but I was wondering if anyone else has plans drawn up that they would like to share. Any help would be appreciated.

any stand that would have more than 10 animals on it would be heavy. A range near Salt Lake City had movable stands that held 10 animals for chickens, pigs, and turkeys. It was a big job hauling them around. Stands need to be heavy to dampen the vibrations so a bunch of targets don't go down when another target is hit. I wish I had a picture of them but I don't.

Back in NY one of the ranges we shot at was a multi use range. They put railroad ties and 6x6's in at ground level and drilled correctly spaced holes to insert rerod with a plate on top for the animal to sit on. After the match they used pieces of round foam insulation to plug the holes so dirt and water wouldn't get in.

It was kind of a pain, but worked and the only problem we saw was a low shot hitting the rod did get you a hit

They used something similar at the New Jersey State Assn. range. One inch diam. rebar with small plates welded on top, driven into the ground about 3 feet. They did not have a problem with rail hits knocking off targets, and I shot monthly matches there for several years. However it was a dedicated range just to silhouette, back in the good old days early 90's. I don't think they shoot silo there anymore We used to swap matches back and forth with the Palmerton PA club, having matches every other weekend through out the season. It was great, but I think they gave it up as well. Dave

We use 3x10 pressure treated bases drilled for rebar (permanently pressed in) We get 3 banks of animals (60 shot match) staggered from front to back (low to high) Two men can move them and set up from storage behind "the berm" We use steel plates as a back stop. Shooting a 40 shot match (using the top 2 staggered banks) has little chance of knocking down additional animals due to shaking/vibration. During a 60 shot match the lower bank stand (front) is in line with the the highest and a hit can shake off the top most animal if it is left standing, causing others to fall

Let's see if I can explain the "Pioneer Piggy Trays"

The smallbore Pigs are placed on sand filled TRAYS behind and above the larger "cowboy size" pig targets. (please forgive my crappy photo editing skills)

At Pemmi" the Trays are for Chickens. The sytem works great and could be semi portable if you wanted. Just dump the sand and stack it away. Another bonus.. your not aming down hill at the littel piggys.

Chickens or pigs in a tray are standing across in groups of five. So no upper or lower bank. Just left to right.

Another cool thing at Pioneer is Chicken and Turkey targets (smallbore) have Deer netting behind them to catch the fly-aways. NO wandering around in the long grass searching to re-set targets.

At our gun club we use angle iron that is attached to steel plate set into concrete pillars. The angle iron acts as the rail and to prevent people from shooting them they pivot on the plate steel and fold down below the existing grade.

Next time I am at the club I will try to take some photos of out set up.

Its been several years since I shot competition but the guys up in Polk County NC put in a system of flat steel plates that when raised formed a great backstop with virtually no chance of a bullet getting out and when lowered they completely covered the shooting rails and laid flat. This kept other shooters from shooting them when not in use and allowed the mower to drive over them. When you want to shoot you simply took your bucket of animals out, raised the backstop, set the rails up (they were stored underneath the plate) and started to shoot.
Like I said, it has been years since I shot but I assume someone in the SC/NC area can tell you if they still shoot matches at Polk County (I think it was the Little Mountain Range). I may have some photos pre-digital days if you can't find any. If any of your competitors are western NC competitors (or the old traveling crew from NC,GA,SC) they may be able to describe it to you first hand. If not, let me know and I will get hold of the guy that built them and have him contact you.

That is a very interesting way to get a backstop for the animals without a permanent berm. Also must make it easy to see your misses unless you shoot too low. Our club shoots 10 across like that too instead of one set over the other, and personally I like it better that way.
