I am in a quandary

I am trying to decide on my next small bore silhouette rifle.

Should I buy a Anschutz 1712, build a rifle from a benchrest action, purchase a Sako or modify my CZ with a new barrel and possibly a new stock?

1712... Or if you are going to take the plunge up to Annie suck it up and go with the Pharr or Wooster stock custom build using the 1712 action or for the ultimate get a 54.18 action and rebarrel it to use in said stocks. But I would go with the 1712 it will not hold you back. If you want to drop it in a custom stock later you are all ready to go.

I believe the current national champ shoots a box stock 1710, single stage trigger in a Pharr stock.... Just sayin.... ;)

I have to admit that I have toyed with the idea of sinking money into my CZ 455 American but I just can not justify in my mind dropping as much for a stock and again as much for a Lilja barrel. I am not convinced it would balance the way I want it to after dropping conservatively $800- $1,000 into my CZ. I was even considering that NULA and Pharr stocked rifle project in the for sale forum.

The more I ponder it the more I am convinced the 1712 is the way to go.

Thank you everyone, I guess I just was seeking confirmation on the 1712.

I thought the 1712 was the way to go also...
I just shot my new Sako Quad in a match for the very first time today at Tacoma Sportsmen's Club in Puyallup and could not be more happy. The rifle performed flawlessly helping me attain the highest 60 shot score I have ever had, 51/60 for both hunter and standard, very consistent. These scores are higher than when I was shooting a 1710 in a Wooster stock. I also got my first 15 turkey pin and finished my hunter rifle Grand Slam. For me the Sako just fits. I think that is the key, finding what fits you. Most people think the 1712 is definitely the way to go, and i'm sure it won't let you down, but there are other options out there. Try em out if you can and see what fits you the best.

I can't tell you if the 1712 or the Sako would be better, but I think sinking money into the cz is a bad way to go. I sunk some money into a 10/22 build but after getting the 1712 I see it was just plain wasted money. I think you will always have the question in the back of your mind if you don't go with a different rifle.

Here's what I tell anyone that asks this question. I went the route of buying a barreled action 1712 from Champions Choice and had Steve pop it into one of his stocks. It worked out great for me and as this was a few years back I was up and running for aprox $1500 before putting a scope on.

What I stress though is this. Get yourself a good scope, a good supply of ammo and practice practice practice. It doesn't matter if you buy a 1712, 452 or 54-18 if you don't practice you're never going to be able to maximize the equipment as you're going to be captian wobble.

Now mind you I'm saying this as a guy who for the majority of this year has been practicing by shooting matches (ie not practicing) and my scores this year have affected it.

If economics are a factor get a good scope, put it on the 22 you can afford and practice practice practice. Remember us dorks that shoot standing up love to share our gear so shoot other peoples rifles when ever you have a chance and as you get better you'll start to see what style rifle is going to work best for you.

A number of us at the Tacoma Sportsmen's Club have observed way too many people (former golfers I surmise) who think they can go out and get a custom build and instantly be competitive with master class shooters just because they're using the same gear. This isn't the case in this game. I hope my tirade is of some assistance to you! Best of luck and good shooting brotha!

Still go back to my Winny 52 and shoot better scores, have the 1712, have 452's, have a few others....Find what fits you David and go with it and shoot the !@#$ out of it.
Train, and train some more. a few hundred thousand rounds more and you will do fine!

Seriously, though, Jerry is right in that you shouldn't sink a lot of money into upgrading something that the parts you have left of aren't going to be high quality. The original poster here seems to already be making the right decision.

The problem here is that the silhouette shooting sport is a rather small circle with people shooting a couple of CZ's, I am one, a Remington, Savages, ect. The only Anschutz based rifle is an older Weatherby XXII; there are no Sakos or even any custom stocked platforms. Our gun club has large animals for one bank and the regulation sized for the other bank. I am one of perhaps 3 people who shoot the small animals and on some months I am the only person.

Kevinbear was nice enough to let me try his 1712 in the morning at this year's nationals to see what I thought about it. I love the way it balanced compared to my CZ. My CZ is WAY to muzzle light/butt heavy for me.

I seriously considered a Lilja barrel and a Wooster stock but that puts me in the neighborhood for a 1712 on the secondary market if I include the original purchase price of the rifle.

I am considering the barreled action and a stock but that is if nothing appears on the secondary market. Kevinbear is keeping an eye out for me up in the Denver area.

I understand that this is not a sport you can buy a great score but my opportunities to try different silhouette rifles is EXTREMELY limited.

I am just not happy with my CZ and I am looking for something that fits me better.

As you can see, there is no one size fits all... I wonder who bought the 452 in a Wooster stock that was on RFC? That was a bargain.
