Where Buy NRA Cast Iron Animals

Post by teetertotter »

We need to buy some replacement animals for our Silhouette range. Someone hauled off a few and not enough replacements on our shelf. Any help is appreciated.

Ray's targets , that's who I got mine from . He is (or at least used to) be the guy that was the "official" supplier for the NRA smallbore targets.

Thanks, I will email him and see if will sell the individual animals. If anyone else has suggestions, I am open too. I used to have a booked marked website of where to order along with many other sites and recently lost all of them due some importing I was doing.

If Ray can't supply them then quality target can. http://www.qualitytargets.com/servlet/t ... Categories

Also there are a bunch on ebay, just search for NRA Silhouette targets

Appreciate the help and looks like Rays targets are the only ones that are available in CAST IRON, not Steel.

The cast iron ones do break and are very hard to weld back together.

Buy steel ones and get the 1/2" thick chickens.

Note that the smallbore chickens from Quality Targets are smaller than NRA regulation size. I haven't seen their smallbore pigs, turkeys or Rams. They do make nice stuff. I have a set of their 1/10 scale airgun swingers and I have a 1/2 scale ram swinger and i am very happy with those.

I have a full set of the Quality targets (sans 5 turkey that floated away...)

I have shot the heck out of them and have seen no appreciable damage to the chickens. They are AR steel.

Just sayin.

Ray Schafer replied to me yesterday and I sent in our order this morning. Now will be waiting for confirmation on price etc so can get our club check mailed today.

He said, "Retiring Again." He is 75 and there might be an interested party to carry on making the Cast Iron Animals. He did not have any chickens left, which we have plenty of, and would be able to fill the Pigs, Turkeys, and Rams I requested.

Thought you'd like to know.

He said, "There MIGHT be an interested party." Nothing for sure. I guess we can email him time to time to check in if someone has taking over the operation. That's pretty much it.

I had to replace a pig on my set of animals scaled to shoot at 40 meters. NOT THE FAULT OF THE MANUFACTURE!! My son was sighting in his AR .223 and the pig walked behind the target board at just the wrong time. That's his story, and he's sticking to it. Anyway, in conversation with Calvin (Mr Quality Targets) I mentioned there was some concern some of his animals might not be the correct size, according to NRA specs. He's genuinely concerned about this. We looked them up on the NRA web sight and printed out the drawings for the 1/5 scale SB animals. He compared one of his chickens with the drawings, I did the same, as I have a set of his SB critters. The Turkey may be a little small, but other than that they all looked pretty good to me. I think all are within acceptable tolerances. Look at it this way, if you can hit his turkey, you will surly be able to hit those big fat ones at the range. :D
Dustin, maybe you left your chicken in a pocket and it went a bout with the washer and dryer. Wash with like colors, cold water only. :D

Either Calvin's chickens are small or Ray's chickens are big. I've never compared either to any drawings but I have compared Calvin's chickens to the cast chickens that are used all over the country and Calvin's are smaller.

I'll take a picture on Saturday when I go to the range and post it here.

Ray Schafer has a new person taking over his cast iron animals and swingers. His name is Greg Chandler and lives in Asheville, NC., [email protected]. He has some spare animals made up, but will take a while before he can say he's in production. Greg is also match director at Asheville Rifle and Pistol.

I am waiting for Ray to reply if Greg will take over his website with current information.
