10-22 for Hunting Rifle

I've hear all the discussion, but I like my 10-22 - it shoot better than I do (seems to be a common thread in my gun-safe).

Are many of you shooting 10-22s in Hunters Rifle?

I shot a 10-22 all last year (my first year). I had a disturbing thing happen during the last match of the year which was our state championship. I changed my hold and was putting my thumb on the trigger guard which I hadn't done previously. This torqued the action causing my shots to to right and high, and the more pressure I put on the guard the wilder they went. I didn't realize this until the last couple shots of the match. Needless to say it was my worst showing of the year.

I decided to get a new rifle so this didn't happen again. Well, that and I like getting new rifles!

So knowing what I do now I would tell you go ahead and shoot it. Just keep your paws off of the trigger guard. And watch your fingers on the hold, that charging handle stings. Also a couple of the vets I shot with said they shot their 10-22's up into AAA, and of course Troy won the national championships with a custom 10-22 one year. Have fun and shoot it. You will probably want to change to a bolt gun like I did, but it never hurts to start with what ya got...

I used one for my fist 2 years of shooting and it worked fine. I would recommend that you make some kind of shell deflector to keep your brass out of the ear hole of the shooter to your right

I shot mine in standard rifle class in our club matches a couple of years ago. It has a reverse taper barrel but is otherwise stock including a stock trigger. I managed to shoot some scores in the low to mid 30's with it, it is accurate. I would like a brass deflector or catcher on mine as it does pitch brass at the shooter next to me. The biggest issue I had shooting mine was the temptation to just shoot through the string without setting the rifle down. And I shot Wolf in it and occasionally it would not eject the empty. I'm still thinking about spending the $ to get a Kidd trigger on it and I wish it had a standard taper on the barrel so I could shoot it in both classes.

Jon, I will have a beautiful barrel for sale shortly. And a Kidd trigger group. The barrel is a Kidd tapered on the shoots lights out. I shot wolf and never had extraction problems, but I did replace the stock extractor with a volquartson. Anyways, if you want to talk barrels PM me.
