Load all 5 rounds?

Centerfires, rimfires, pistol cartridges and everything in between.

Load all 5 rounds?

Post by snaketail2 »

I was shooting a mach (CLA) this past weekend and noticed that a couple of people did not load 5 rounds into the magazine - instead they would loading one round, work the lever, and fire. Then repeat the process for all 5 shots (load #1 and shoot #1, then load #2 and shoot #2, etc.).

I thought we were to load 5 rounds into the tube before firing. Where I shoot is pretty relaxed on the "Official NRA Rules," so I'm asking for clarification

What they were doing looked OK, but is it OK by the rules? If I do that at Raton are they going to send me home early?

Rules state the rounds have to be loaded thru the magazine. Doesn't say anything about them having to be ALL loaded prior to chambering a round. Some magazines actually are difficult to have all 5 in the mag at the same time.

A lot of folks load 1 in the mag, chamber it, load a 2nd in the mag, repeat as necessary. The point is all 5 have to go thru the mag, not how many at one time are loaded.

Single loading from the magazine lets you use pointed bullets. Or saves deforming cast bullets. It's legal long as it comes from the magazine. Drop one in the chamber it's not.

Boats,

I believe the rules state that bullets must be flat or round nose, so no spitzers.

My interpretation of the rules is that all rounds must come from the magazine...not in any particular order, just come from the magazine to the chamber. Round nose or flat tipped bullets are legal. I load one at a time in the magazine and then chamber to to slow me down. I shot action pistol and the steel challenge years ago and I need to slow down , so loading one at a time keeps me from going too fast. There is no bonus for shooting all 5 animals faster than time allowed.

Hugh,
I was about to make a comment about it being summer in FL and that means swim suit or no clothes in this part of the country, so I was wondering about panties being in a wad, except maybe in the unfolded clothes pile!!

Now back to the rule in question...at all nationals that I have attended (not just Lever Action) if the firearm has a magazine/tube the rounds must come from the magazine/tube. In all cases there is no requirement that all five be put in the magazine at once, you can single load each shot into the magazine. This is almost always mentioned at each nationals, typically because of failing mags, (Kimbers are noted for that).

I have to agree with Glen. I load 1 at a time in the magazine to help me take my time a bit more. I notice with the rimfire that I tend to hurry with all 5 shots in the tube.

I started loading one at a time this shooting season. It definitely causes me to slow down and think more about what I'm doing, and have never run out of time because of it. :)

I have noticed that a lot of the top shooters load like this. We shot at the Kansas regional and I made it a point to watch some of the master shooters and they loaded one at a time. The shoot was great...we got to see a lot of good folks again.
