Sight Setting

Post by chuck d »

I am shooting my first CLA match next week. Have a soild load and zero for 100 yards- 35.5 leverevolution behind a Speer 150 Hot Core. Using a CM at 100, if I hold the beed on the bottom of the chicken at 50, will I be good?
Also same load at 150, what am I looking at as far as a come up? 1/2 min?

at 200 I am using 170 Speer Hot Core with 34.5 Leverevolution. Any idea on a come up from my 100 load?

Thanks

chuck
I am shooting a Win 94- a Buffalo Bill commerative, with WIlliams rear and Lyman front. Its fun at the range, people ask, shouldn't that be hanging on a wall? That looks like a collecter! I love it. Guns are made to be shot! I am looking for a Win 1966 Centenial commerative, can't wait to hear what people say about that being shot. :))

Looking at my old sight settings for my 30/30 XLR 4 years ago I found zero @100 and up 16 clicks for the rams with a 150 Sierra at 2300 FPS.
Which is about what you are getting. So try 8 clicks for the turkey.I can't say with the 170 because of the difference in barrel time and recoil.
You will only be able to tell by shooting at 200.

Wow, you are shooting 150s @ 2300+ fps at chickens? I hope those are some sturdy chickens. That's a ram load for most shooters. Why such powerful loads on anything other than rams? That's a lot of unnecessary extra wear and tear on the targets, your rifle, your brass, and your shoulder.

Because I am new at this, it shot well at 100 yards, and that is what I have for bullets (they are a bit hard to find now)
But I am open to suggestions!
Was going to try TrailBoss, but can't find any 110 30 Carbine bullets.

The 150 will take rams, reliabily?
I do have 130 Speers

thanks

In most cases A 150 will not take rams reliably you will need to step up to A 170. I also shoot 150 on chicks and pigs but with A lite load of 4759. 2300 fps will be a little hard on chicks. There is just no need to put your self through more abuse than needed.

On the ram question, it depends on the wind direction, where they're hit, and how they're set... If they're set "full footed" 150s won't take them reliably "at all" and even some 170g projectiles won't take them with center body hits. If they're set they way they SHOULD be (just forward of tipping), I'd estimate you'll take MOST, depending on the wind and shot placement.

At one of our local ranges where the rails aren't quite as flat, the rams are a little beat up and their feet aren't as true, I've never lost a ram with 150g CorLoks running 2000FPS at the muzzle. Heck I've even taken them with 125s on a day I grabbed the wrong box of ammo. However, they definitely fall slower than when I use 170gr pills.

Conversely, at another range where I shoot occasionally, where the rams were set correctly and there was a slight wind to the back side of the targets, I've lost rams even with 170s... It's just that particular range has flatter rails and truer feet on the rams than the 1st one I mentioned and they are definitely harder to take down, regardless.

I agree with most everyone else, 2200FPS 150gr loads on chickens may test your match director's patience, or at least whomever has to repair them (unless they're the of the 1" thick variety I've seen at one range). 100gr Plinkers or 110g carbine bullets over 9 to 11gr of Trail Boss are all that's needed for most chickens. If you want to standardize on one load for chickens thru turkeys, the 150gr bullet (or even 125/130gr bullets on the birds) running 1500-1600FPS (i.e. - 14 to 15gr of SR4759) will do nicely and not leave you "a/k/a flinchy".

Save those shoulder basher loads for the rams, but look for some 170s "if you want to be sure".

Just my .02,

-Tim

PS - Sight settings, and the amount of adjustment required, will vary shooter to shooter or sometimes even gun to gun... even with rifles from the same manufacturer. As an example, I've a 336MX and a 336A that could not be more different in elevation changes, even using the same exact loads. While both are ballard rifling, they have different lands/grooves, and definitely want different amounts of adjustment from one target to the next.

THanks guys-
Will a 130 Speer and 9 gr Trail Boss be a better chicken load? My matchis Sunday and I will have NO range time before it.
Thanks

Yep, much easier on the shoulder and would work good for chicks.

FWIW, I've never shot 125s or 130s with Trail Boss, but;
  • - With 110gr bullets I got 1440FPS with 9gr of TB up to 1600FPS with 11gr with consistent 2" to 2-1/2" groups at 100meters. At 11.5 and 12gr the groups started expanding exponentially.

    - With 150gr bullets I got 1278FPS with 9gr of TB up to 1350FPS with 11gr. Best groups with the 150gr were with 10gr of TB. I have used these on pigs, but did leave a 3/4" thick one with a low belly hit.

I have to repair our targets and factory 30/30 ammo doesn't seem to hurt them. Now when I shoot the 30/30 I use 110 gr. Sierra RN now at almost 2300,about 3.5 grs under the starting load with RE-7,for CPT and 170 gr. Sierras for the rams and a case full of LVR.A fellow shooter rang several turkeys with 110 Hornady Rn at 2000.If I can ever find 125 gr Sierras again I'm going to try those for the CPT.
