I single load straight into the chamber for standard class. I single load down into the magazine for hunter class, just to keep within the rules. In either case, I only load one at a time so that the rifle's weight and recoil path will be the same for each shot. I don't think anyone would ever notice or care if I loaded straight into the chamber for hunter class, but I do it just to keep my conscious and my head clear during shooting. There are some rifles that rounds with bullets seated out near the lands won't fit in the magazine, but mine isn't one of them. For those rifles, they can't be loaded through the magazine, especially for more than one round at a time.

Jason, I'm interested where the rules say you can single load into the chamber in Hunter class. These are single shot rifles corect. If they have a magazine doesn't it require you load from that. Not trying to cause trouble but everyone has told me I have to load the magazines. I'm new to HP rifle.

I do single-load into the magazine for hunter class, because that's what the rules say is required. To make sure it's clear, I push one round down into the blind magazine and then push the bolt forward to chamber it. I don't bother with pushing it down into the magazine for standard class if I think about it, but I shoot the same rifle for both standard and hunter so sometimes I push the round down into the magazine for standard just out of habit. I definitely do not load more than one round into the magazine at a time, which is not required. My rifle is a tuned Rem 700 with blind magazine in a Pharr RTS stock. I said that I doubt that anyone would notice, of care if they did notice, that I didn't push each round down into the magazine before chambering it. I've never looked to see if anyone else was doing it while shooting hunter class, and can't say that I really care whether they do or not.

I follow the process Jason said, load one round into the magazine and close the bolt. Completely within the rules according to Herr Connor.

If it was a single shot from the factory then you can single load. If it was a magazine equipped rifle from the factory then you MUST load the round you are about to shoot into the magazine and then feed the round from the magazine into the chamber.

However, you do not need to load all five rounds into the magazine at once.

No, there is no rule that Hunter rifles have to be repeaters. You can buy a custom singleshot action and turn it into a Hunter gun.

Granted, this does defeat the original intent of the Hunter class.

If the action was built without a magazine from the factor then it is legal for hunter. This includes custom actions as well as actions such as rem 40x.

Have to laugh.... Long background of shooting other sports - mainly USPSA and 3 gun competitions.... Half the people there bend every rule to look like a pretzel with the other half speaking of "spirit of the game..."

And Please don't think I am being to rude as it just strikes me that in Every game you keep score in people try to find the better/smarter/faster blah blah blah way to do "whatever". IMHO - It sure helps make it interesting and keeps everyone on their toes...

I may just have to go with a full out super duper custom action as I am sure that 1/4" smaller group at 500m will "MAKE ME THE KING..."... Most importantly - without me having to practice...

I single load also directly into the chamber for Standard and one at a time into the mag well for Hunter. I already asked about the loading tray idea too lol. Not so I could load longer rounds or any of that just to prevent me from scarring up the brass on the feed lips of the mag well. Since then I have smoothed out those two lips that the case rides against that cut into it ever so slightly and things are smoother now for mag loading. They were pretty rough from the Remington factory I must say.

The shooter I spot for likes to go ahead and load 3 into the mag well on the Ready command and then pumps in the last 2 rounds after those are gone. Not a bad idea to keep you focused for 3 shots without a reload needed and it gives you a little break to suck in some air before the last 2 shots.
