Where are the matches?

Hello,

I frequently see posts of people asking where the nearest silhouette matches are. To address this, I think it would be a good idea to create a US map with dots on it representing ranges offering silhouette matches. With all the GPS units out there it should be fairly easy to get lat/lon information on the ranges. Then we just need a program to plot the coordinates on a map. It would be great if the dots were clickable so range info, schedules, etc. would pop-up. The map should also be zoomable so tight clusters of dots could be resolved. Once it's operational SteelChickens could post the map for all to see.

While this seems pretty straightforward with today's technology, it's beyond my capabilities. Any volunteers are welcome to run with this idea and develop it as they see fit. Or not...

Hey Mike,

This is a great idea.

There are lots of tools that can do this relatively easy on the web. Google Maps just released a tool called My Maps which is perfect for what you want. What you do is create the map and then publish it, and everyone can see it.

I also have the tools that can do this, and the willingness. What I would need is the Lat/Long of the locations and what data should be displayed, such as:

Range Name
Silhouette Types (SB, HP, LA, etc)
Address, City, State,
Silhouette Contact, email, phone.
Website
Schedule....etc

Here is an example with two locations:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?f=q&hl=e ... 53125&om=1

These maps can be opened with Google Earth if we pull the KML file also. If the interest is there, I would be more than willing to help with the effort.

I've seen a few of those Google map types - they seem pretty cool.

chunter, if you want to work one up, we could probably put it in a Link or a permanent post (heck, maybe both).

We may need to use tinyurl.com too.

Casey, That is the same one I was looking for when I ran across that other one I posted. One of the other sites/forums I'm on uses the one you show as to show where the members are located. Great tool and because you can link the clubs web site even more useful.

Yes I am think tinyurl.com may be needed.

I would recommend that we mainly put the location information, contact info, and websites in. Mainly, because this data doesn't change. If not, each link will have to be updated every time there is a schedule change. Instead we could put a link back to steel chickens match schedule page for schedule info. It looks like this new My Maps from google is the best way to go. It looks like it can handle pictures, and links, etc. As long as the data is relatively static it should be manageable. I will start putting some of the sites in.

Ok,

I have made a first pass at it with the North East Area Locations that I had received. Take a look and let me know if I have screwed up any of the location data, or if it should be formatted differently.

We also have the option of having different colored icons for different types of matches or ranges:

One example:
All Sanctioned Matches -- Green
Fun Matches -- Yellow
Nationals - Red

or

Highpower locations -- Purple
Smallbore Locations -- Green
BCPR -- Red
Places with both or more than one -- Blue

or

whatever.

There are lots of different icons that can be used, so the minds the limit.

Approved matches, Standard and Hunter and a fun "club" match shooting 1/2 scale animals each 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Sight in at 9 a.m. match begins at 10:00. Both classes shot each match a lunch break in between. Bring your own lunch, and something for Kitty. 5 dollars per match (shoot both hunter and standard or a combination of either hunter or standard and the club match for 10 dollars.
