J-B bore paste, do you use it or not at all?

Bob McAlice suggested the topic and I decided to start it. Yes I use it some times for barrel bore cleaning and also for fire lapping inexpensive .22 barrels. That is all I am going to say about it.

I use it if I need to. None of my RF Silhouette rifles even the factory barrel CF Remingtons needed JB.

I have never used J-B Bore Paste, instead I use J-B Bore Bright. I don't think I have ever had to use it in my Krieger or Lilja barrels, maybe because they were properly broken in?

I suspect someone will get around to this so I will go ahead and ask: Do you think someone could ask Helga what she thinks about J-B Bore Paste, spits or ??????

That is a good point. I've never felt the need to use any of the pastes (bore-paste, bore-brite, IOSSO, Flitz) on my rimfire barrels. Then again I only have one rimfire that's either not an Anschutz or wasn't lead lapped from the maker. I suppose some rimfire's could benefit from some polishing when they are new.

Jim, someday your 6.5 barrels will be eroded to the point of bullets leaving copper deposits behind in the micro creavices. You can not stop this from happening. My most fired match barrels just started to accumulate small amounts of copper which from prior experience I fully expected to happen. They still shoot very well even after 3800 shots each. Occasional use of the JB paste keeps the copper flush with the steel. It becomes visibly noticeable with out a borescope after the 200 or so shots fired each gun at the St. Louis match. I dont bother to clean during this match, the rifles shoot fantastic to the end of the match.

When they stop shooting to my expectations I will simply replace the barrels. They are nothing more than a wear item like tires on a car.

Two comments from bench acquaintences:

Barrels are like bullets. They're expendible.

(Any of the fine metal polishes) do a good job of cleaning up trouble areas occasionally and aren't aggressive enough to take enough barrel away to be of concern.

There are some factory barrels that are so rough that much more aggressive action is warranted as you are going to take the barrel off if the situation does not improve. In that situation, several grades of valve grinding may be appropriate, but care should be taken to make certain none of these aggressive abrasives are left in the action.
