Marlin Receiver Sight Holes
My first lever silhouette rifle was a newer 336 XLR .30-30. Made in 2007 and still JM, but they had eliminated the traditional holes for a side mounted receiver sight.
I was not entirely happy with a top mounted Williams, so I am going with a Redfield 75. I have to D&T the 6-48 holes spaced 13/32". I don't have any other Marlin to look at, but I examined several in pictures on Gunbroker, and have a good idea where the holes are located. However, as I look at the inside, there is a vertical slot toward the rear of the receiver, that appears to be very close to the rear sight screw hole. For the hammer block on the newer Marlins? From pics I have seen, some of the cross bolt post-1988 Marlins still had the mounting holes, so I know it was done at the factory for awhile.
Anyhow, has anybody D&T'ed a late Marlin 336? As I looked and measured as best I could, I don't see any reason why the holes couldn't be located a tad farther back , and leave plenty of metal around them without going into that slot or interfering with any function.
Any thoughts on this? I did post this on the Marlin Owners forum.

Re: Marlin Receiver Sight Holes
Redfield 75. Ended up making my own mounting base. The hole spacing, per the Lyman schematic posted elsewhere on this site, is .4025. Nobody, here or anywhere else I asked, could provide the specific measurement. Everybody told me to "just..." I can do "just" as well as the next guy, but I wanted the exact factory spec. Anyhow, I'm all set with the sight.
Now, if I could just get the danged rifle to shoot. It's a late JM 336 XLR .30-30, and the most temperamental rifle I have ever owned, bar none!

Do you still have the Williams FP sight that you tried but didnt like? If so, do you want to sell it?
