I know that FTX bullets ain't legal for CLA.I was wondering if I could shoot my 308 MX with 30/30 type bullets.I shoot much reduced loads for 110 gr RN carbine bullets in the 30/30 for the CPT and something I would hunt with for the Rams,different load for each gun.I would load this in a like fashon.I would shoot this gun some times,just so it doesn't feel unwanted and unused in the safe.

dgslyr, if you read the rules you will not see that the 308 MX is not an allowed cartridge. I know people that have used it in CLA competition for years. It's really is one of those do not ask do not tell kind of thing. If you were to make an issue out of it and ask the silhouette committee for "permission" to use it chances are not in your favor that they would "officially" give you their blessing.
A few years back we had another tread here concerning your question and I do not remember what happened, you may want to search it see if you can find it.

Well I went to the NRA website and it says the same thing my 2008 rule book says.

"Any lever action rifle .25 caliber or larger with a tubular magazine of original manufacture or replica thereof.A rimmed case loaded with a round or flat nosed bullet must be used.
Exception: 35 Remington is allowed."

As far as target damage goes I can get 2800 fps with 110 gr bullets from a 30/30.I know for a fact that will damage the chickens and the rams don't notice it if you hit them.45/70's will break the feet off the chickens sometimes with factory 300 gr.ammo at 1800 fps.It will make the chickens try to fly over the berm trying to escape.Since I have to weld the feet back on and fill in holes I 'm not interested in making more work for me or anyone else.If it has been specificly banned wouldn't they print it somewhere?

I am the one that put the first post on here about the 308mx. We really never came up with A real answer to it. If you go by the rules then there is no reason why you can not use it. The 308mx is legal the way the rules are written. It is in all reality based off the old 307 Winchester case so there is no logical reason to not allow it.

There is no reason I can see that the .308 Marlin Express would be disallowed. Having said that, ANY cartridge that damages the targets should be disallowed. That includes a 30/30 or a .22 rimfire. The dimensions for the .308 MX clearly show that it is at a minimum a semi-rimmed cartridge because the rim is a .508 while the base is .470. Since the cartridge has been used and approved in at least the last 4 Nationals, I think they'd have a hard time justifying why it was no longer allowed. Again, it all comes down to how you load it. Factory ammo out of my .44 Mag will without a doubt damage the majority of the pistol cartridge targets out there so I load it to just less than 1000fps with a 180gr JHP bullet and I haven't damaged a target yet.

Both of the Marlin Express rounds are allowed here in AUS and we us the NRA rule book. They have a rim on them. I just bought a 338MXLR and will use 200grn RCBS cast bullets in it.

In the equipment survey from this years nationals there is one 308 listed. It jus states 308, not MX.

I used my 308 MX yesterday.I shot a 30x40 the first time out with this rifle.
