How far can a CZ 452 sIlhouette go in smallbore matches? Anyone made it to the top with one?

Re: How far can a CZ 452 sIlhouette go ???
I made it to the top end of AAA with a CZ 452 Varmint, and might have been able to make it barely into master in hunter class had I stuck with it longer before getting the Anschutz 1712. It didn't have a lack of accuracy, but the trigger (I tried every kit, adjustable sear, and full trigger replacement) was definitely a detriment at that level compared to the Anschutz and the longer lock time of the micro-Mauser action may have cost me a hit occasionally on edge breaks. I've seen several master scores shot with CZ rifles, but I don't think any of the top master shooters would choose one for a big tournament. I see no reason why anyone who has a CZ 452 wouldn't be entirely happy with it once the trigger issue is dealt with until they knew that it was holding them back.

What could be done to correct the trigger problem if anything?

I have been told the proper way to correct the CZ trigger issue is to remove and replace the CZ rifle with an Anschutz 1712.

I use my CZ452 Silhouette for a back up gun and to shoot NYS Sporterifle in the winter. Just buy a Timney trigger for it ($85.00) and modify the stock a little bit and your trigger problems will be solved.

Re: How far can a CZ 452 sIlhouette go ???
There is nothing wrong with a CZ452. You could shoot that gun into Master class and keep it forever if that's what you want to do. It is plenty accurate. This game is about the shooter, not the rifle.
My suggestion is to get a Timney trigger set at 2 lbs and find a trigger shoe for it to make the trigger feel a bit lighter. The only thing that you cant currently get with a CZ is a two-stage trigger, which some people really like (me included). If you are okay with a single-stage trigger and you are a good enough shooter and you practice - you have all the gun you will ever need with the CZ.
The Anschutz rifles are REALLY nice though

That is my problem.... I love my Style and know it's still got plenty of shooting in it (I bounce around from AA to AAA) but a 1712 sure would be nice....dustinflint wrote: The Anschutz rifles are REALLY nice though![]()

Re: How far can a CZ 452 sIlhouette go ???
In the hands of a top master shooter, a CZ that has been tweaked as much as it can be can shoot master scores. I have two CZ 452s now and have had others, with every trigger upgrade or replacement that has been offered in the past 10 years. One of them currently has a Timney replacement trigger with a wide trigger shoe and the other has a Rifle Basix replacement trigger. They're the two best solutions on the market currently for trigger upgrades, and neither is as consistent or clean-breaking as an actual match trigger, which can be demonstrated with a Lyman digital trigger gauge and careful testing. They're good enough for most folks, though, and won't make any marked different in scores until a lot of other skills are well-developed. My suggestion is usually to start with a CZ, upgrade the trigger, and buy a good scope to go on it that can be transferred to an upgraded rifle should the shooter eventually decide that one is needed (or just wanted). Then the CZ can be sold for almost as much as it cost or it can be a backup silhouette rifle or a great hunting rifle. My CZ 452 Varmint is my backup/loaner silhouette rifle now and was devastatingly effective on ground squirrels this year. After tweaking it for silhouette, it's way too nice a rifle to sell for the price that CZ rifles sell for.

Anschutz rifles are too rich for me! I just relayed what I have been told.

I am going though this now with a Kimber 82 that I have shot for a long time. It's a solid AAA class gun. You can't put your finger on one particular thing that holds the rifle back. However the Anschutz 1712 is just a little bit better in every single area. If some body is a 75 % shooter they only need to pick up one or two targets to shoot Master class. Better hold can do it but a better trigger and barrel will help. Not to mention most matches are won or lost by one or two targets.
Hated to do it but just mailed a check for a 1712

Re: How far can a CZ 452 sIlhouette go ???
There is nothing wrong with the accuracy of the CZ it will just never be an Anschutz. I started with the 452 Sil and worked my way up to AAA before springing for the custom 1712 and now I have a 54.18 as well that I still don't shoot as good as the 1712 (only had it a few months to be fair). I would concur with pretty much everything said above.
I look at it from the standpoint of how much ammo costs compared to the rifle. I'll shoot well over a case of ammo a year especially when its nice out I will shoot a lot here at my house as well. So while roughly $2000 seems like a lot for one rifle in a matter of 3 years give or take I will have spent more on ammo than the rifle cost me. One more year and you can include the scopes cost as well. If I went to sell it today I wouldn't take a beating on it either. So the upfront cost is more of a rental fee plus ammo expenses. If you take good care of it you can get most of your money back years after using it. Not many things you can buy top of the line even that you can use weekly for years and still recoup most of your money from it if you sold it.
Bottom line is you only live once and life is too short to shoot crappy guns. At least that justification has worked well for me so far
Really though once you start to shoot the cream of the crop it is hard to go back to something lesser. Be it airguns or powder burners they all have a upper echelon and once you dare go there you are FUBARed and the disease takes over. If it is something you are going to use for your hobby and sport on a regular basis you might as well go for the gusto. I have thinned the herd as well in doing so to help pay for the new rifles but also because I know the others will never get shot now and if I am not using it, it needs to go unless its heirloom guns etc.
I have a cheap little 4 HP outboard motor and 10' Jon boat I used to go fishing in every once in a blue moon. If I went fishing every weekend I would have a 21' Center Console bay boat. You want to talk about expensive

Oh and if anyone ever offers you the use of a HP rifle to try out that game I suggest you run in the other direction screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! But hey the ammo costs make the gun look really affordable at least
