Inverted Lyman 17a insert...Legal?

Has anyone tried using a Lyman 17a and inverting the post or beaded post insert? I tried sighting my 39a in at our last match using the narrow plain post insert inverted so the post is at the 12 o'clock position on the targets and ran out of elevation going to the turkeys. I thought if I tried one of the other inserts it might work. Is this even legal? Also I have the Lyman mounted in the ramp not straight to the barrel. A barrel mounted sight might work better...

I don't know about inverted but 17A's in the Ramp dovetail are too high for me. Elevate the rear to zero my head is way above the comb and unsupported. Some guys like them that way though. There are several 17A heights avalable could be you are using one of the higher ones.

Shooter at our clubs unscrewed the ramp and put a dovetail under it. Ever take the 17A out of the dovetail the ramp will cover the slot if re-installed. Thats what I am going to do to mine.

You are aware that the Lyman 17A comes in (3) different height models. Measured from the base of the dovetail to the centerline of the circle. at: .404, .494 & .584
I'm using all three currently; On my Marlin39A I use the .404, On my Puma 357 I use the .494 and on my Win 30-30 I use the .584.
For the loads I'm using these sights put the rear Williams sight at about a 1/4 form bottoming on the 357 & 30-30 when starting on chickens.
The 39A is a little different. I have the .404 mounted on the ramp and it puts the rear Williams at about 1/2 from bottoming out when start on the chickens and just barly makes the Rams without the rear sight coming out if the slide. Not the best but it works for me.

I am aware they come in 5 different heights (.404, .465, .494, .584, .854 according to the Brownells website). I should have mentioned I am using the Lyman AHB (.404) in the ramp with a Williams Foolproof rear sight with Target Knobs for the 39A in a side mount configuration. It takes 11.5 revolutions to get to chickens from the bottom using the short narrow post insert. I am using the Blue box Federal Champion 510 ammo. When going to turkeys I elevate only one more revolution and that is where the sight comes apart. I put the factory sight and hood back on and the chicken zero is still 9 revolutions up from the dead bottom. I may have to put a shorter front sight insert in the ramp or cut a dovetail in the barrel to use a Lyman 17A.

From memory you can get a .260 high bead from Brownells. This ought to make the rifle zero fine. I would rather have a 17A though.

You can also get from Brownells a longer elevation screw for thr Williams sight. You may have to trim it some to get down to the chickens, but you will gain turns to get to the rams. Al

You will have to get the long elevation screw with a .404 height 17A mounted in the ramp.You will have to trim it some to get it to go all the way down.
It is longer then needed for this particular application.I can go out to 200 if I want to.

Absolute Noob here looking to glean from those more experienced.
As stated above, there are various heights of Lyman 17a front sights.

If I have a Marlin 1895 44mag/spl, and want to use Williams FP/TK rear sight, any guesses on what height Lyman 17a front sight to use?

I have no clue as to which height is most useful.

I also had to get the long elevation screw for my 39a. I had to grind the first three threads off the screw to make everything work properly, but now the chickens sit dead on the center line of my Williams FP.
