Anschutz Model 54 Match

I have been seeing a few Model 54's and Model 54 Match rifles for sale in various places. Most have Benchrest or freesytle type stocks and nearly all are single shot.
Would one of these actions and barrels work for a Silo gun if dropped into a decent stock and set up by a good 'smith like Evelio or the like? I see some of these for sale at what I consider a darned decent price and it would seem to me that they are a great action and great barrel capable of moa or better groups at 100 meters.

I haven't been able to find anything else I like, so I have been giving consideration to having one built up for me.

My first silhouette rifle was a 54 match that someone had put a thumb hole silhouette legal stock on.
I used it for a year and found it to be very barrel heavy. I had a gunsmith shorten the barrel and now use it for our 50' grocery shoots.
I bought a 64msr to use the following year and found that more to my liking.
I reciently ended up with a 54 match with the hook, a hand grip, and some scope looking thing for peep sights. If I take the hook off and the hand grip I could probably use it for the grocery shoots. But they are about over for this year. So it may be next years project rifle.

If you can find a 54 match cheap. Go for it they are a great place to start.

I believe you old need a stock and a new barrel to meet regs. I have no doubt that Evelio has done this several times but I wonder if it would be cheaper to get a 1712 to start. Of course you would be getting a really cool custom rifle out of so that is areal plus! Steven

If you start with a 1800 or 1900 action and then add a barrel and stock, it is going to be an expensive proposition. It would probably be faster and cheaper to get a used 54MS or 1712. If you master the "used rifle" then you would know what you want in a custom rig. And even before getting a custom rig I would consider swapping some stocks on the "used 54ms/1712". Some guys like to have rifles built and there is nothing wrong with that, but sometimes that is a separate issue from shooting. It is more of an ownership, than marksmanship thing. ( Disclaimer: I have more guns than most spanish speaking countries, so I do not often follow my own advice).

The only thing I would make sure the the 54 have the 5018 style trigger. Some of the old ones have a different trigger, I beleive. It would be a little heavier setup than the 1700 series, but the trigger is great.

Went through the "does it make sense" calculation year ago. Had a 54 Super Match that I shot small bore prone with in the late 90's Rarely shot it after. Already owned the rifle so no cost there, and it was a wonderful shooter with probably the best single trigger I ever used.

Sold it to a club to be used with Junior shooters for 750, thats probably market selling price for these rifles. Asking prices are more but they are not fast sellers. Add the cost of cutting down the barrel and re-stocking you are up around 1712 prices. Of course some of the 54 Match extra parts could have been sold off however add it all up might as well buy a new Anschutz. Only thing that may make it come out different is if you compare to 54 MS prices which are through the roof.

If you ever sell used a 1712 is going to bring more than a worked over Match 54 too. 1712 is the gun to have all things considered. If custom best start with a 1712 barreled action and go from there.

Thats how I figured it.
