Silhouette ammo

My club has shot smallbore Silhouette in the past, still shoot BP and CF. I am starting up smallbore Silhouette and steel shoots. We want to shoot steel at longer ranges, maybe out to 200m. I have been out of rimfire for a while. What ammo is the best for Silhouette and long range? I have shot Eley Silhouex (sp) but can't find it anywhere, I guess they have stoped making it. What are you shooting?

It's what works best in your rifle and everyone is different along with teh price points for each brand... that said I use Lapua Center X and SK Jagd Plus

Just about any ammo that is under 1100 fps and groups under 1 1/2 inches at 100m. I think you are looking at over $400 per case for acceptable ammo.

Decide on the price point that you're comfortable with for both matches and practice. Test several brands in that price range for what groups best at 100 mtrs and buy a case. SK Standard Plus works well in both my standard and hunter guns

RWS R-100, why? because they don't make R-200.

I bought a load of RWS Target rifle before prices really went nuts. Lot to lot it is pretty consistent. For mid tier ammo, I have pretty good luck with it. If I were to buy some better stuff I would look at CenterX. I never used it, but guys that do seem to really like it. Lucky or unlucky I am also sitting on 4 cases of cci standard and federal standard for chicken practice. So the RWS and wolf will last a while in my "armory" before I am buying anything new.

When I started silhouette shooting there wasn't the selection of ammunition there is today, the local airgun/smallbore gunshop carried R-50 and R-100, CCI Greentag was about half the price of R-100 but it shot really well in my 541-S. I still keep a few boxes on hand for testing but use the Lapua brands except for BR-50 which pretty much demands Tenex.
I have not shot Center-X next to R-100 but in most of my guns both will shoot both under 3/4, if one has the edge I would bet on the RWS. That being said none of the R-100 I have is current production. 200 yards with a 22LR is ammunition testing at it's best, ammuntion wasting if there's any wind, unless there were some great prizes on the table I wouldn't waste my ammuntion or time.

My 2 cents is mid priced CCI Std at $28.00+ tax a brick, performs 1.25 inch max, off SB at 100m, 5 shot groups, in my CZ 452 American, summer 2011. Rifle and ammo are better than me.

My rifles also like the CCI std. Very consistant out to 100 meters, where it really matters.

I have been shooting SK Match for the last year or so, and I am very happy with the results........In my indoor league I shoot Center-X, but I have a hard time justifying that price for silhouette....

That reminds me, I have 3 bricks of Blazer that my 4th grade granddaughter uses in her youth Savage and should give that a try for our indoor winter league this evening. I plum forgot to give that a try at 50ft. Our indoor league is one that you show up between 5 and 6PM and shoot on your own time and record score. Cost is a $1.00 in the pot and is based on best average who wins the pot each week.

A few of the guys that shoot in our plinker league shoot the Blazers, and they are very happy with them.......they are shooting them in mostly savage's, and cz's............

I agree with JerryG. I shoot Wolf, Ely Club, CenterX, you name it. Basically you have to find out what your rilfe likes to eat. My CZ 452, Anschutz 1712 and 4Rem 40X all have different tastes in ammo. I have a friend with an Anschutz MPR that loves Blazer. Never been that lucky! Good luck finding that perfect ammo match, but the secret is practice.

Yup, Teetertotter. I guess ole dum you and me shoot the same CCI SV. The same ammo I used in the mid 80's in my 581S to shoot sub 1" groups @100 meters.. My team won a few national postal matches using it. Dave Deo Vindice

I'm the match director for a long range steel shoot with .22LR rifles at our local gun club at Fort Valley, GA. We shoot swingers at 100, 150 and 200 yards from crossed sticks and 250 yard rams, also from sticks. The disk sizes of the swingers are 6", 9" and 12". The rams are slightly oversize 3/8 that were cut wrong. I'm going to change up the game a bit by adding 5 each 3/8 chickens, pigs and turkeys at 100, 150 and 200 yards. Before anyone criticizes our match, I'd like to clarify that we're trying to attract new shooters and not make the game too difficult. Experience shows that too difficult games drive the less skilled away and there aren't enough hardcore shooters to make it worthwhile. We shoot both iron and scope classes plus adult and youth classes.

WRT ammunition, any standard velocity round will take the 250 yard rams down. In our three matches so far, no one has dominated. Ammunition used has been from Wolf MT to Federal AM-22 (Auto-Match). I won the second match using Aguila Super-Extra Standard Velocity (1135 fps) and won second place in a shoot off in the last match using the same ammo. We do not allow hyper-velocity ammo.

Our most popular club match each month is an off-hand .22 silhouette match using 3/8 targets at 40, 60, 77 meters and 100 yards. Shooters can number from as few as 20 to as many as 30. We have target stands also at 100 meters for NRA rules matches and could host state or regional NRA matches which is a goal we'd like to achieve.
