What are the options on the reticle on the new 25X and 30X Leupold Silhouette scopes? I got all excited about these scopes and then found out that they supposedly only have very thick to thin crosshairs going into the dot. We like thin crosshairs and a 3/8 to 1/2 MOA Dot. What is the minimum closest AO focus? On rimfirecentral there is a post from someone that bought a 25X and it had 50 yards as the minimum parallax distance. The chickens were so fuzzy he could not use the scope for Smallbore and is sending the scope back for a refund. I am sure they would be great for Highpower Silhouette but I would like to try one for Smallbore Silhouette. What is the real story on these scopes?

Bobby,
That was an concern at first but I contacted a person at Leupold that supposedly was in on the design of the scopes. She told me in no uncertain terms that the scopes focused down to 40Meters as they were "silhouette" scopes and that is what they were designed for. She mentioned them NOT being EFR and if you wanted to shoot "gallery" (or air rifle) you would need to add the 50' adaptor.
As far as reticles go, I don't know if you have ever seen a "large" leupold dot (.0060) but it does not tapper the entire way. It tapers out from the edges very quickly into a "fine wire" cross hair with a floating dot on the wires. I have MANY inquires about this dot as it is the dot that is in the 6.5-20EFR's that I sell. I have offered that anyone that is not happy, please send it back before mounting (as I am always back ordered on them) I have got nothing but rave reviews.
Cullpepper ordered one just to look it over, ask him about the reticle (.0060 dot) but I do not think that is a factor.
As far as sales go, I do not plan to ship any before I inspect one. I have held the payments sent to me and will return before shipment if the scopes do not do what they say.
I called Cathy with Zanders (a national suplier) and she gave me the name and e-mail of the person at Leupold to contact. Not a sales rep, not a customer rep. This person said ..
"Hi George,
The Silhouette scopes, 25x and 30x will focus down to 40 meters. There may be some additional play closer, but that is what they are called out for. For the purposes of gallery, you can use the Alumina 50 foot adaptor that threads on to the objective lens.
Let me know if there is anything else you need"
and

....Update
Ok,
I just heard from a friend that I trust and know and he has seen/used (2) of the 30X's and they would not focus down. Will try and get a 25 and report back....
If they don't focus down to 40, I along with many others will be confused to say the least....

atomicbrh,
I have shot under the leupold tapered dot for years and I cannot tell it is tapered unless I put it on white paper that fills up the whole objective and specifically look for it, as far as very thick taper this is just not so. I have even used the new 6.5X20 leupold with the custom .0060 dot and it is the same as my old preimers. You can look at mine the next match we are at.

Mine is on the way back to Leupold - chickens were fuzzy. Leupold customer service tells me they can adjust the scope to where it will focus down to 40 meters. I asked that the minimun forcus be change to 50 feet if possilbe as I like that for indoor practice. Leupold charges $30 for the service - my letter to them reads that the scope should have focused down to 40 meters to start with since they list it as a "silhouette" scope. We'll see what I end up with.

I sell these (both the 25X and the 30X) and have the 25X with the 1/2 MOA dot in bound, should be in stock Monday / Tuesday.
BUT!!!!! Before Any of these ship The question will be solved. I have (as well as my dist) a nuber of folks at Leupold involved in the resolution. The problem is that they are a large company, left hand / right hand thing. I spoke with a tech rep this after noon and she was reading the design / build specs for the scopes and had them listed at 50 FEET. I spoke with the designer last week via e-mail and she said 40 meters, may be a little closer to allow for slight changes, etc. She mentioned if one would want to shoot "Gallery" with it they would want to add the 50' adaptor and that would give you "room" for 25 yard work and air rifle silhouette. Then I have also seen the 50 YARD statement. A friend was shooting (2) of the 30X's at the range in Dallas and they were "fuzzy" at the bottom of the focus on chickens. A designer told me that there was a problem PRE PRODUCTION with the range of focus with the sun shade installed, but that problem before they shipped any consumer units.
I personally feel like the "F-calss" guys are part of the issuie as they are looking to the 30X to get them out to 600/100 yards. As I understand it, whereever the bottom may or may NOT be right now, the top is at 100 or better.
Leupold may have "relocate" their A/O range as billing it as a "Silhouette" scope , we have no need to focus past 500 meters. Take some of that "headroom" and put it back into the low end WITH OUT taking too much off the high end.
If you want the best price on one, I feel like I am the man BUT I will not ship you one until this is cleared up, and I suggest you do the same rather than getting into a ship back and forth senario to get it fixed. I also feel that Leupold will make it right, they have too much $ in equipment / design/ marketing / advertising to just "dump" the project.
Please contact me if intrested in a quote / more info / updated info as I get it,
Thanks,
Chicken

Open letter to Leupold.
I don't think you invested to many $ if any in market research....!!!
My question is does anyone at Leupold shoot Silhouette? If not who is their Silhouette adviser? And who is his optician?
My perfect scope would be:
1. X24/25
2. Parallax/focus from 8 meters to INF.
3. Perfect range finding and return to focus.
4. Perfect tracking.
5. Target Knob on elevation.
6. 16 to 20 oz's
Oh you made one of those didn

A bit of an update - I have two of the new Leupold 30X "Silhouette" scopes. One wouldn't focus down below 43 meters and one will focus down to 40 meters at the very end of the adjustment. I sent the one that would not focus down to 40 meters back to Leupold with a check for $30. I just got it back and, according to their repair order, so they adjusted it to focus down to 25 yards. I haven't had a chance to check it out. I talked with a fellow named John at Leupold and he told me that the "Silhouette" scopes were designed for center fire silhouette - so it appears that several different stories are coming out of Leupold. The end result is that I now have two scopes that should work for rim fire silhouette. I do like the reticle Leupold used in the scope and I like the adjustment capabilities of the scope.

Will try and post a reply after lunch. But I have the details on the leupold scopes. If you have one that is focused down to 25 yards, according to the enginers I worked with at Leupold, you would not get anywhere close at 100M.... Keep in mind there is the ability to get 2 different stories.
I delivered a scope on Sat. Was crystal clear at 40M (a 25X)
I do have a deal set up with Leupold to recolluminate (sp) my customer's scope for free (even shipping both ways with pre-paid call tag). This will give you a rimfire version (~38yards to ~200yards) and the HP is as is out of the box....
Will get more details in a bit...

I agree that Leupold didn't do their market research before launching this product.
If they had, the focal range would have accommodated every silhouette discipline from air to high power.
By the way, How can we advise Leupold on # rifles shooting each discipline? Does NRA have these numbers?
My guess is that smallbore is king followed by air rifle. High power is distant last place, trailing behind the pistol and cowboy shooters.

It will be interesting - I talked with the fellow at Leupold before they adjusted the scope and I specifically told him that I was going to use it for rim fire silhouette - that I needed it to focus at 40 meters out to 100 meters. I was told he understood what I wanted and that they would adjust the scope accordingly. I plan to check it out after work to see if what I received meets my needs.
Also I suspect - but don't know for sure - there is a big difference between the 25X and the 30X focusing capabilities. But if I wanted a scope in the 25X magnification range I would use a Weaver T-24, which is around $200 less expensive than the Leupold.

The deal may be the 2 different parties we are talking to. If you were talking to someone that was going to be charging you $30 then you were talking with the "Technical Services" group. I was talking to the boss of the design team / mfg group that is building them. He assured me at the start of the process that he had his superior's approval to spend any amount of man hours and $ in customer support (i.e shipping and expidited usage of the Tech Services group) to get a resolution. This took roughly 1 week to get hashed out and was a done deal on Thursday.John wrote:It will be interesting - I talked with the fellow at Leupold before they adjusted the scope and I specifically told him that I was going to use it for rim fire silhouette - that I needed it to focus at 40 meters out to 100 meters. I sent them the specs for all (3) dicp that we shoot - Air Rifle, Small Bore, and high power. I was told at one point they thought they were getting the scope focused at 25 yards but after a couple of days of additional testing they said "40 yards, and not much under" was the very bottom within the specs that were given. They said at this distance they would go out to ~ 200 yards. I also defined 'Focus" as being able to read paper, not seeing a shape.
They were not able to get Air Rifle, but other 2 are avalible.
Thanks,
George
