Different Stock

Post by steveyacht »

Being as my Rem 541-T will not qualify for Hunter Rifle I have a couple of questions. First, would it be advantageous to get a different stock that will make it/me more competative in Standard Rifle? Second, where should I look to find such a stock? Do they need to be custom fitted/ordered? I would like a slightly higher comb so that I don't have to crane my neck so much.

Thanks In Advance,

Steve

I'm not a Remington expert by any stretch of the imagination - but is the 541T too heavy to make weight as a hunter? If so, would a lighter stock allow you to make weight in hunter?

The reason I ask is that a lot of shooters successfully use the same rifle for both standard and hunting classes. If you can get it to make weight with a lightweight composite stock as a hunting rifle, you could then use it for both classes. Guys like Evelio McDonald and Mark Pharr are the best in the business when it comes to fitting barreled actions into lightweight composite stocks.

There may be other gunsmiths who are equally well qualified, but these 2 guys are as good as anyone.

It isn't the weight that is as much of an issue as the barrel has no taper and I believe the trigger pull is too light. I am more than a little interested in having a dedicated Silhouette stock Standard rifle. That way I can buy another one for hunter class. I am always looking for an excuse to buy another gun!

The barrel in the 541T is actually tapered, if you put a mike about 3" in front of the action, and at the end of the barrel, you will see a diference in dimensions, enought to qualify it as a tapered barrel, no different than a 1710 heavy barrel version. The trigger can be re-adjusted to 2 lbs. all you have to worry is making the 8 1/2 lbs. weight limit.

Steve,

Boyds sells the "Blaster" a silhouette thumbhole stock that is very comfortable to shoulder (at least for me) uninletted. So you can inlet to fit any action you'd like. Ive actually thought about putting this stock on a 540 I have. However, I havent yet because I have a few projects i need to finish first..

Cheers.

Evelio,

Thank you for your reply. I should have told you that the action has been rebarelled with a Broughton Barell that is not tapered at all. The work was done by Brian Voelker. I am considering a new stock for several reasons. One is to use this action and rifle for my Standard Rifle. Two, I can put away the original wood stock so it won't get beat up. Three, it gives me an excuse to get another rifle! Either a CZ 452 or, preferably a Remington 541-S.

Evelio, if you could give me some idea's of a stock, I would appreciate it! Maybe a photo or three of a Remington that you may have done in a custom stock.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Thanks for asking Evelio that question, Steve! I've wondered if a CMP 40x could be set up to make Hunter class, but didn't want to hijack your thread. But since you brought it up... :D

Steve/Bob,

I am sure Evelio will answer but since I have done this I will post some pictures of what can be done. If you want to turn a CMP 40x into a silhouette rifle without changing the barrel you would have to start with the lighter barrel and you would still end up with a standard rifle. Of course like me you could replace the barrel or take the chance and turn it down. If the Pharr stocks are available later this year Evelio can put pretty much any action in one since they come in as a flat top. I used to have a 541 in a Richards stock with a tapered Pacnor barrel and have two 40x hunter guns with Lilja #5 barrels. Here are some pictures of all three.
Good Luck to you, Paul

My preference for Sil. stocks is the Robertson/Pharr stocks, but since they are no longer on bussiness, the other choice would be the Wooster stocks, or even a Brown Precision. Also since you are looking more at Standard class, a Mc Millan Sil. stock will work. If you are not in a hurry, there is the posibility of the RT/S stocks being available again sometime in the summer.
Bob
Like Paul stated, there is no way to make weight with a Std. CMP 40X as is. The barrel would have to be cut, tapered, and probably fluted to make weight. For the money it is better to start with a new barrel no.5 contour or a Lilja copy of the 1712 barrel except with a minimum of 1.200" dia. at the chamber end. With this combination, one of the Treebone wood stock copy of the RT/S will work also.

Thanks Evelio! It has been a rough patch but I'm beginning to rebuild, and given a preference for US made, I was considering a CMP USMC 40x sporter and shortening the barrel, but since it also requires turning to make weight, it just becomes impractical. And since the USMC 40x has a 722 receiver, then the standard CMP 40x sounds like a simpler foundation.

So a CMP Barreled receiver, PT&G bolt and ramp, Remington small parts (bolt stop, etc.), trigger, stock, bottom metal, action bolts and Lilja barrel? Gee, sounds simple enough...

Bob,

It is simple, that is how I built the one in the Maple stock. All you have to do is buy the action, bolt and small parts. Then pick the stock and barrel and have the smith place the order. Oh by the way you will need to send him between $2200 and $3000 depending on grade of wood or glass stock.

Steve,

Here are the two McMillan stock that Evelio is talking about. The gray one is a thumbhole silhouette and the bottom is the McMillan Master. I have the bottom stock and it is a flat top for a future project. Both can be purchased as a flat top or inletted by McMillan.

If all you have is the stripped barreled receiver, you would be better off buying one of the Stiller's Stainless actions copy of the 40-X. I had 3 on my hands so far, and they are a piece of art.

Bob,

Take a look at this link to the Stiller Lonestar action. I have one that Eveilo put together for me as a 22 bench rest rifle. They are a fine action and would make a great silouette rifle.

...or, you could cut the bbl back to 21.5", use a PTG fluted aluminum striker, and install an aluminum bolt shroud and get your stock wt down to 23 oz (doable with the Pharr stock) and it's a hunter. The muzzle ended up @ .780" at that length. The picture I have of the rifle also includes its stable mate... 40X STD rifle... and the file is too big to post. They both wear TX flag paint, so I know Paul will know which ones I'm talking about. Point is, it can be done with the original bbl but you do end up muzzle-heavy.
