decreasing flyers

Post by shooterxtc »

THIS IS A QUESTION ABOUT AMMO: DO YOU WEIGHT SORT AND SORT FOR RIM THICKNESS? ITS SEEMS TO ME IF YOU ONLY GET A FEW FLYERS PER BOX SORTING AMMO MIGHT ELIMINATE THEM. YOU COULD USE THE ODD SIZED OR WEIGHT BULLET FOR THE CHICKEN LINE.

An expert here said that there are as many as 50 variables on .22 rimfire ammo so you may get rid of a couple of flyers if you sort by rim thickness or weight but I do not think you can get rid of all of them with that many variables. If you were to use a chronograph and run at least thirty rounds through it chances are you would know how good or bad the ammo on that particular lot # is depending on the results.

I have noticed that sorting ammo and verifying that it makes a difference with that particular brand via chronograph *can* make a large difference in group size. The reason I say *can* is because when comparing two bulk boxes, Federal and Winchester, only the Winchester benefitted from the sorting, while the Federal stayed as inconsistent as usual. However, I have yet to notice a difference when sorting match ammo like Wolf or Eley. This is all for bench/prone shooting though, I can't say I'm a good enough positional shooter yet to take advantage of sorting any ammo. YMMV of course.

It has been my experience that real cheep crap will shoot better if you sort by rim thickness. The same is not true for the better ammo.

Try sorting by rim thicknes and mark which way your gage went over the head. Then turn the case and do it again. You will get a different thickness.

What you have NO control over is the priming, the powder, or the bullet. All effect acurcy.

Use the best equipment and ammunition you can afford and practice. All I need to do now is take my own advice.
