imssu world championships
hi,
any one ever go to cape town for the IMSSU world championships? rules are almost the same as NRA, a few small differences.
no alibi's except if a target gets blown over, no leeway for equipment failure
hunting( light) rifle cannot have a custom barrel
the USA is not in the IMSSU list of countries, but there are no eligibility requirements in the rules.
i do love CapeTown., that would be a hell of a road trip.

Re: imssu world championships
I believe;
The 10th IMSSU Silhouette Shooting Championship will be hosted on the Atlantis Range, Cape Town, South Africa during the period 26 March to 5 April 2012.
(Looks like 'Frankenhunters' are taboo !!!)
Imssu rules, Rifle and Handgun;
http://www.imssu.org/documents/Rules%20 ... 202010.pdf
The only alibi permitted in an IMSSU match is when a target is not available because it
fell before it was engaged.
Firearm malfunctions and faulty ammunition shall not be cause for an alibi or the
allowance of extra firing time. Should a firearm fail to function during an event, another
firearm of the correct type may be substituted to complete the event.
Big Bore; Hunting Rifle
e) Barrel:
Will be that of a hunting style rifle. Any replacement barrel shall conform to the
dimensions, configuration and material of the factory original. No non-factory
chambering will be permitted. Recrowning of barrels is permitted, as is the removal of a
section of barrel to correct damage to the muzzle, provided that the removal of that
section of barrel does not alter the weight of a rifle to the extent of allowing it to fit into
a weight class that it would not otherwise fit, had the barrel length not been altered.
Small Bore; Light Rifle
d) Barrel:
Will be that of a sporting rifle as supplied originally by the factory. Any replacement
barrel must be an original factory barrel manufactured for that model rifle. Recrowning
of barrels is permitted, as is the removal of a section of barrel to correct damage to the
muzzle, provided that the removal of that section of barrel does not alter the weight of a
rifle to the extent of allowing it to fit into a weight class that it would not otherwise fit,
had the barrel length not been altered.
d) Take note also;
Stock:
Must conform to the factory stock which came with the rifle. Attachments, either
removable or permanent, are not permitted. Swivels and slings are permitted, but
slings may not be used for arm support in shooting. The stock may not be hollowed out
externally. No thumbhole stocks are permitted. Bedding and the addition of any
standard non-target type recoil pad and butt spacers is allowed. Stocks may be
shortened or lengthened as required.
cheers,
SS

Re: imssu world championships
Basically a subset of the old NRA rules, before the NRA's Mad Franken Friday when anything and everything was allowed in Hunter. (except Chin guns)
although the IMSSU weight was increased to 8lb 8ozs to accomodate the US shooters, I guess.
Last IMSSU AGM was attended by a Ron Bain,
if anyone knows him, I guess they can get in touch.
I believe he is or was from New Haven, MO ?
Also the Winsteads have attended IMSSU shoots regularly.
Only other rule to maybe take note of is the Hunter trigger;
Can't see anything else that might cause distress.
c) Trigger:
May be adjusted but may not be replaced with a custom trigger. Minimum trigger pull of
.907 kg (2 pounds). Triggers which function on release are not permitted. In the event
of accidental discharge, the Range Officer shall require trigger adjustment or
replacement of the rifle. Rifle must be equipped with a functional safety.

George Lively would be a good source of info, also. I know he has been there at least once and has had a couple of S. Africans at our nationals, Nick Opperman and Tim Inman come to mind.

Re: imssu world championships
I know some one who is considering attending this match, providing one of his center fire hunter guns can be certified. The barrel material (stainless vs. carbon) may be the sticking point. Of these rifles which one(s) has the best chance at being certified?
A...Rem. 700, blue action, H-S composite hunter stock, 24" Douglas #3 stainless barrel, 7-08.
B...Rem. 700, blue action, factory wood Classic stock, 24" Remington factory #3 stainless barrel, 7-08.
C...Ruger 77, blue action, factory wood stock, 24" Remington factory #3 blue barrel, 7-08.
D...Rem. 788, blue action, factory wood stock, 24" Remington factory #3 blue barrel, 7-08. (18.5 inch was std. length of the 7-08 in the 788)
E...Rem. 700, blue action, factory wood Classic stock, 24" Douglas #3 stainless barrel, 7-08.
Sorry for the HP question in the SB section but.....

Re: imssu world championships
Hi Bob,
These guys at Milnerton/Western Cape will probably be running the show.
Good guy to get hold of is Ludi Starke, and ask him for a contact to get a ruling.

Contact: Ludi Starke - Tel/Fax (021) 972-1987 Cell (083) 556-4005

I would say that if the barrel is the same contour as the 700 factory offerings, and they have produced in stainless then it should be good to go,
given that weight/trigger/and template conform to the IMSSU rules.
A good way to show conformity is to produce a Catalogue showing a similar factory rifle.

Re: imssu world championships
choice b and d are the only one that will (or should) pass the rules, replacement barrels are not kosher unless they are direct factory replacements. like the rem barrel on the ruger is not a factory replacement.and if the contour was not the original some one could make a case against the rem barrels.
i must say when they say hunter they mean a factory hunter.
that is providing they follow the rules. if you did pass tech and some one noticed the discrepancy you would lose the challenge and have to pay the penalty.AND be disqualified. long way to go to take the chance. i have made the flight, jfk to senegal to capetown....brutal

Re: imssu world championships
a ruling seems out of order since it is clear it must me a factory replacement. as far as the sako customshop guns go for the Finns, a customshop gun is still a factory rifle as would be a Gunwerks long range hunter etc. as long as the options were listed it would be considered factory. so a customshop 40x should be allowed. as long as the barrel is attached at the factory.
i do think that it would be the road trip of a lifetime to go, the food is amazing the people are amazing the land is amazing.
