Colorado State High Power - 2011

I didn't take as many photos as I had thought I would.

We had phenomenal weather here in CO today. Absolutely beautiful. Too bad almost nobody showed up! We had a total of EIGHT shooters today for Standard rifle. That is pretty discouraging to say the least. None the less... we had a kick butt time! As you can see from the score board below, Mr. David Bonner was on FIRE! He shot a 70 out of 80 possible targets. I personally have a tough time fathoming this. He missed 10 animals out of 8 sets of 10. Hell, I might miss 10 animals in one damn set! Haha!

After the matches were over this afternoon we decided to have a "fun shoot" and everyone threw in two bucks to the kitty. We had ourselves a highpower Bandito Match. We matched up 2-man (and woman) teams and each team had their own bay of 5 Pigs to try and knock down before the other teams. I'll tell you one thing, you add a race to win and high power rifles and it is a hell of a lot of fun!! David Bonner and Jeff Block were the winners of that. Jeff knocked down 3 and David picked off the other two. The rest of us were just going too fast to hit anything!

I did shot well myself, but I am right on the CUSP of moving into AAA. I had many stupid mistakes that kept me from getting a couple more points and hitting the 26/40 mark. I am SOOOOOoooo close. I need 2 more in Standard gun and 1 more in Hunter. My goal for tomorrow is to get my AAA classification for Hunter.

On to the photos. Congratulations to Bonner for an outstanding day at the range. I'll post up our results tomorrow for our Hunter gun scores and maybe some more photos.

Day two of our Colorado High Power state matches was for the Hunter gun. We had a little wind come up today and our scores reflected it (especially mine!). We had a couple more shooters today which brought the total up to 11. Lee O'neil was our aggregate match winner for today. It was close with Bonner only one animal down from Lee. I wasn't even close to scoring my 3rd AAA hunter score today (unless I added both matches together!) I stank up the whole place with my shooting! It'll have to wait until next year.

McAlice showed some of his gang affiliation and flashed some "colors" on some of his Rams and Turkeys. Ha! He had a couple of them with these ribbons and they were worth a buck if you knocked them down in your relay. Some good fun!

Bonner talked him into shooting the little baby bullet launcher. I think I saw a glimmer in McAlice's eyes. Watch for the Guru to show up at a match near you with his new .260!

Yep, we had a great weekend for shooting the State match. Saturday was mostly calm, but Sunday was a little windy at times out of the SW requiring about two minutes of correction on the T & R targets. I got unlucky and caught some bad conditions on one bank of pigs and only hit four. We picked up two more shooters on Sunday for hunter gun. Oneil had ranch chores to do on Saturday and Ed P. thought going to some local college football game Sat. was more important than shooting.

I got out there Friday afternoon and met Bob S. to set up the range. Things were going to plan until we got to the pig line. Bob was driving the truck and I was pulling out the pigs from the trailer. We have had this red ant problem nest right behind the rail at pig #5 for years. Well, Bob hits the mound with the truck tire and really pisses off the occupants. Dumb ass me does not see all the commotion below and grabs the pig and sets it up. In less than a minute I got a dozen of the bastards crawling up both legs inside my jeans stinging and biting all the way. One Rambo type climbs all the way up to my tender ass and got to clinging, biting and stinging it, too.

I had to drop my pants to pull these little demons off my skin ! You would think that after getting a 30 pound slab of steel dropped on your house all the time you would pack up and move. Instead these SOB's got meaner and multiplied. I am not sure if these were the genuine southern fire ants or some quarter inch long nasty hybrid but, my legs felt like they were on fire for three hours after that unprovoked insect attack. They will be getting the gasoline and match treatment next time I visit.

Dave Bonners fine performance with the heavy gun on Saturday set a new State record breaking the old one of 67 x 80 set at the Watkins club back in the early 80's. It is also a CRC club record which will likely stand for a very long time due to our prevailing prairie winds. CRC is the only active HP silhouette range in the entire state. And his 36 x 40 is a personal best score, too. It took me years of nagging to get him to try HP. Five years ago I lent him my 7 x 57 Ruger for a match and the rest is history. Very nice shooting Dave.

Just to add some fun to the event I set up some targets with an orange ribbon tied to them. Two rams and two turkeys, one each in each bay. They would pay out one dollar for a hit scored an X. Poor Geri S. nicked her turkey in the breast and spun it 45 degrees. You could hear the sighs from down that end of the line. All totaled I gave out 25 bonus bucks.

Not a single ram ringer happened all weekend. All the usual numbers were there...6.5's, 7mm's and a .308. I myself hit approx. 65 rams during practice and match all weekend. I brought out five of my 7-08's and was hitting them with 139 Hornady SST, 150 and 168 SMK's and a bunch with 175 Hornady Interlocks. Hit locations were all over the board but all fell no problem. I am still puzzled by my three lost ones in St. Louis, though.

This was our season ending HP match. We will start up again next April. Now we need to figure out how to get more shooters to try out High Power Silhouette, the first and best of the silhouette games...period.

Baking soda, meat tenderizer and amonia, mixed....stinks like H@#$ but will take care of most all stings. Don't store it in platsic for long as it doesn't do well in platsic bottles in a truck. Carried it for years int he field though. Taught to me by an old Idaho indian.

I am sure McAlice or Bonner can fill in the unknowns there. Quite a few 6.5s there for such a small group. At least 4 or 5 people using 6.5s. Heck, there might have been more 6.5s than 7s!

I use a 7mm-08 currently. My 6.5 Creedmoor will be finished sometime in Oct/Nov. Waiting on Savage and Shilen. I use a 7mm-08 in a Hunter configuration though.

AD9, that is three words. It does sound safer than playing with gas and matches. I will get some Sevin instead. Those ants got it coming, they done messed with the wrong Guru.

Huey,Trent is being modest about the description of his hunter 7-08. Only now it wears a spanking new blue RP factory barrel. I think it looks even better in two tone SS/ blue.
