Stock weight?

Greetings all,

given the positive response to my question about building a hunter class silhouette rifle on Anschuetz 54 action, I have acquired an action with 5071 trigger. Since I would like to have the rifle build as close to the 8.5 lb weight limit, I would like to understand the weight of the components. Would someone be kind enough to weight and post result of Pharr RT and/or RT/s stock? Does anyone have one right-handed for the 54 action they would be willing to part with?

Can't help with the weight, but maybe Robertson Composites can. They can also sell you a stock. I ordered one last week, they told me to expect about a 6 to 7 week lead time.

Nemo... We've put two of them together just like you're describing... Match 54 actions and Pharr RT/S stocks. Used Lilja #7 contour bbls that had been fluted. Stocks have to come in at 23-24oz (and they can...) to allow the rifle to make weight with bbls that heavy. Use a slimmer contour and you can use a heavier stock... Hope this helps.

thank you for the response with the stock weight. Here is my naive thinking. I will collect some of the parts, i.e., action, scope, scope rings, and weigh them. Did I forgot anything? Than, if I know the weight of the Pharr stock, I can order the appropriate barrel.

Another Factor. You will not know what the stock is going to weigh until you get it inletted, bedded and the hardware for it. Call Robertsons (613.228.7543) and ask them what the weight of their stock is. They can probably give you an uninletted weight. If you are wanting anything from Robertsons also remember that the Canadian postal service has been locked out by the government because of "rotating strikes" that was disrupting the mail delivery while contract negations are going on. Because of this labor dispute the Canadian Government has shut down their own postal service hoping to settle their disagreement. The only way to ship gun parts out of Canada is the postal service so stocks might not be coming until something breaks and the government allows the postal workers to return to work. That is if the postal workers want to return before the labor issues are resolved.

thank you for the reply; I knew I would forget something by weighting the stock by itself; that was why I asked if someone could weight one, to get a more accurate number. I e-mailed Robertson.

An RT/S flat top stock is 2 1/2 lbs. once it is inletted, pillar bedded, and a light butt pad installed, it will be around 2 LBS.

I do not mean to nitpick, but in-letting/bedding will add weight, correct? Did you mean stock is 1.5 lb and with in-letting/bedding 2 lb or 2.5 lb an 3 lb when in-letted/bedded?

Evelio is right on, the stocks are heavier before inlet because as he says they are flat top. No action or barrel channel inlet. Once he machines the material out of the action and barrel area the stocks are lighter. I have a 700 remington and a 54-18 bedded to an RT/s and both weight right at 2# with a light rubber pad. I have an RT but added weight to the forend due to the light Anschutz 1712 light weight factory barrel. Before adding the weight it was 1lb 15 oz.

You have to take a lot of foam out of the stock to loose a few ounces. If you think you have to have pillars, I'll bet the weight doesn't change much.

The inside of the stock is not foam, it is a very strong and heavy propietary compound. The foam is only in the butt of the stock. After building over 300 rifles with the RT/S and RT stocks, I think I should be familiar with the stock weight.
As far as pillar bedding, that is up to the gun builder, personally I would not build one less pillars.

I don't if it matters/helps; but my Wooster Hunter stock, pillar bedded, mounting hardware and trigger guard is right at 24 oz.

My McMillan stock is filled with light stuff. I don't care what you call it, it doesn't weigh very much.
