Celestron 20 x 80mm Binocs - great glass, great price.

After seeing these binoculars in a previous thread here on Steelchickens, I purchased a pair and had them at Winnsboro this past weekend. I had them mounted on a big Samson tripod, and they worked great for spotting in SB silhouette.

These binocs got plenty of attention over the weekend, a lot of people took a look through them, and most people were pretty impressed at the "bang for the buck" factor.

I thought that I got a great deal on these binocs for $119, until I got home after the weekend, and found that they can now be had for $106, including shipping. There's nothing in it for me, I just thought I'd pass along this reduced price on a very nice set of binoculars for spotting. Here's a link to the Adorama website featuring these binocs...

I saw this bino setup but didn't have a chance to check it out in Winnie. When I see binos I automatically think wayyy to much $ for me. Can anyone tell me about how well they saw the mirage with them at Winnie? I was using a KOWA 80mm and could see it running directions very well with some short focusing. Were you able to see short focus these binos and see the mirage well? Is the clarity crisp all the way to the glass edge?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of using binos versus single lens scopes for spotting anything inparticular that would make it more appealing or less besides many of the price tags? Thanks for any info they look like a great deal.

I'm no expert, but I could certainly see the mirage and which direction the "waves" were moving. I'm not sure what you mean about short focus, but these will focus down to about 50 feet, and seem to have very good control over the actual focus (being able to sharply focus at all distances). The field of view is good, I was able to see an entire bank of animals in one field of view. I think that might be one of the advantages of binos versus a single spotting scope setup (field of view). The images looked good to me, and we were able to see bullets pretty easily.

I'm not any kind of optics connoisseur, but I can tell you that I'm very happy with this setup.

They sound pretty good especially for the $$.. What I mean by short focusing is when you come back from the sharp focus on turkeys and rams to just look for the mirage movement at closer range to the shooter. When you come back a bit and you let your eye relax to focus on what appears to be blurry nothing you can see the mirage distinctly and get an idea of whats happening at those closer ranges where it is likely to affect the bullet more with drift or tell you if the flags versus the mirage drift is cancelling one another out somewhat.

I have know since I started going to Winnie that one side of the range is decidely different conditions at times than the other. This past Sunday I would say was a about and inch of drift according to the flags. But the flags at around 35 yards or so in the middle of the range were not telling the whole story. When they showed what appeared to be about 1" of drift they were correct but they did not really change their appearance when the drift increased to over 2" at rams. After the shooter I was spotting for missed 2 rams just off the chest with a call of just off center right I noticed the treeline was not moving when the wind flag showed 1" of drift but then the wind would pick up and and the flag still looked like 1" of drift but the trees started to bend in the wind indicating stronger drifts so the call was changed to edge of rump and then center hits were being made. So many things to look at and learn from with this it is amazing.

With using both eyes you get, better depth of field and clarity on where the shot hit & less eye strain. Those are the biggies.

I happen to use these at the range a few days ago and I will admit, the clarity is very good. The price is actually deceiving on how good of quality the glass is. Also, a plus is that the field of view is so large, ounce you lock onto a bank there is no moving from animal to animal.

Is this the best set up to work witrh as a coach/spotter?
I have a Kowa 27X in 66mm that I use for XTC. Are the Binos better for Silhouette?

Binos are better because they cause less eye strain and give the spotter better depth of field for POI input/calling than using a mono scope.
