Stock suggestion for Anschutz 1712 barreled action

Hello all!

I am planning on purchasing a 1712 barreled action and want to pair it with a non wood stock. My use for this gun is tree squirrel hunting, informal fun target shooting and possibly silhouette use in the future. I have only put a 1712 silhouette model to my shoulder once in a dealers show room and liked the feel of the wood stock especially the cheek piece. I have not felt the stocks sold by Pharr, Wooster or the McMillan 1700 fwt stock.

I am looking for suggestions from others about what my best bet might be? I do tend to like the rounded forearm portion that the standard wood stock comes with. My initial thought was that the Mcmillan 1700 fwt stock appears to be the same as the normal wood stock that comes with the 1712 gun and maybe it might be a good choice?

I will be using the Leupold VX3 6.5-20 EFR scope with this set up.

Your advise is appreciated.

P.S. Is it recommended for the stock to bedded?

I am 5'8" and about 190 lbs it that makes any difference on stock size.

Silvermesa, great choice of an action. As for stock, they are as personal choice, much like the scopes. If you intend to hunt squirrels and maybe shoot silhoutte in the future, I would go with a stock the points naturally for you. That being said, what comes into aimpointing and feels balanced and natural to your build could be just about anything. Neck length has a lot to do with your prefernce to comb stlye on a stock, and grip is another choice. Large hands tend to like the big palm swell, some smaller hands do well with much less in the grip area. Balance of the weight is a preference, a lot of the position shooters tend to like the barrel heavy balance. Try holding a few different styles and weight balances to see what feels right for you.

I live in Missouri and was wondering if there might be a silhouette event coming up soon where I might be able to hold several of the silhouette rifle stock possibilities?
I have never been to a silhouette competition. Would events like the Southern Nationals at Winnsboro have a trade show or booths with manufactures showing their stocks that they have for sale? Could you buy a complete gun at an event such as this? Seminars etc for newbys?

silvermesa, Yes the Southern Nationals is a place to hold, shoot fondle many different shapes, sizes and types of firearms as well as scopes! It probably has the largest collection of mixed types of silhouette rifles (and some not really built for silhouette) than any other match in the country, and yes usually most of the custom builders are there. As for being like a trade such as SHOT, no silhouette match ( or even smallbore matches I have shot) meets that level, but then the experience of the shooters at the Southern Nationals is unmatched anywhere in the US. Many shooters come from Missouri....come on you will not be sorry and you may find a rifle/stock/ scope and who knows what else you can't live without.

Any comments from my other son (Peep club) jjp, who I talked into trying this match last year, even when he was worried about not 'being good enough to compete!"???

It is a great place to get started. I shot one match and headed down to Winnsboro. I've been hooked ever since. Everyone lets you fondle and even shoot their equipment. In that long weekend I shot more types of rifles than I could possibly list.

I found silhouette by looking around the net for a 1712 squirrel rifle. That lead me here and Innocent got me thinking about trying out silhouette. I was worried to death that I would be out of my league. Not the case here. Everyone at the matches are glad to help out new shooters. If they will take me in, they will take in anyone. Since that match I've been all over the country shooting. If I hadn't have been looking for that 1712 squirrel rifle, I guess I wouldn't have found all these good friends and a great sport.

Any of the stocks would work for hunting. I would get sling swivels installed and you would be good to go.

As for a seminar, Commander Kitty (John Neihouse) and I are going to host a seminar for juniors, but we will be happy to have other newbies listen in and attend, at Southern Nationals right now looks like right now it will be Friday afternoon.

I do live in Columbia, Missouri.

I am considering making the trip to Winnsboro but if a match was closer that would be fine as well. Mary mentioned that some of the custom builders are at Winnsboro. Is their time mainly occupied taking care of their clients that are competing in the competition'? Do they have help there with them to assist others in selection of a stock or gun? Do individuals have their rifles for sale at the event?

There are matches IN Columbia, at the Green Valley Club, just north of town. I'll have to find a schedule, but they hold NRA SB silhouette matches through most of the warm part of the year.

silvermesa, yes usually someone has at least one rifle up for sale...cuz they are building something else! I have yet to attend a match and not see the custom guys find the time to talk with any shooter. There will be several of the various styles of stocks there, from Wooster, Pharr, Evelio, and some of the homemade from blanks, to modified of the shelf blanks. You will not be sorry if you make the trip, it is worth the learning experience, not to mention the door prizes, and awards.

It is indeed worth the trip. The best part is meeting the people at the event, both who compete and also those who run it. Southern Nationals was also of fun, other than the weather. ugh.

There will be alot of interesting rifles to see, and most shooters will let you try them out during the practice sessions of the event.
