Newbie wants a High Power

Hello.
Went to Sundays small bore match early to watch the High Power boys at their craft.
I wish to start shooting High Power.
I spoke with a few top shooters and I am looking for a 6.5x47 Lapua in a hunter class legal rifle so I can shoot both classes. Dare to dream.
I like my guns in excellent shape and really like the Mcmillian stocks.

would seem like a good way to start without a large $$ investment.
have never shot the HP. Want to. And that's what I have to take, if I ever do it ....lol.

Being so new to this hunt I am feeling my way around....
I have a Sako trg 22 love the gun just not for shooting off hand.
I do not see the right makeup in the Sako lineup.
Bummer that their triggers are very nice.
Tikka, not familar with that line made by same company I see, Thanks for the idea.

Caliber selection being I guess the limiting factor here it was just pointed out to me that ths is a new round. Go figure.

6.5X47 is a good round, yes a newer round than the 6.5X 55 but still a great round.

Update...
I am hearing how wonderful the 7-08 is as I understand it the Rams in Southern California sites I intend to shoot at are difficult to knock down I guess the 7-08 pack a bigger punch....

Yes, wonderful is the right word to describe the performance of an ideal silhouette cartridge. It does pack a bigger punch...on the targets, not the shoulder. You do not need to load it hot for this game. 130 to 150gr. bullets at 2550 fps MV are perfect for the CPT. Hit the rams with 162 to 168gr. at 2650fps MV

Something to keep in mind..there are many brands of factory rifles chambered in 7-08, Remington alone has 14 models in this cartridge. They are plentiful and reasonably priced if you look around. Good used ones show up on this site frequently. Loading components are equally abundant and easy to locate. Loading dies are among the least expensive in their size class. You can stay entry level with a Remington 700 SPS or go the full custom route and spend a lot of money. The 6.5x55 Swede is another great round for this game but you will find fewer factory guns chambered for it. The .260 Remington is very popular, on par with the Swedes performance, but long abandoned in factory chambered rifles. Used ones are rare. It is easy to have one built.

The 6.5X47 Lapua is a good round for silhouette and quickly is becoming the cartridge of choice among seasoned veterans of the game as well as first time competitors. It does have milder recoil and should be considered an appropriate choice for the recoil sensitive. However, this cartridge will require a custom build at great expense and wait time, as there are no factory chambered guns for it that I am aware of. Handloading tools and components for this cartridge are more expensive than the others.

There are other caliber/cartridge combinations in use but most are wildcat designs based on the .308 case head diameter.

.... Hambone, as his mentor, you need to have a long talk with CZFL. It's just a matter of time before he gets the urge to have a high power gun of his own. From what I am hearing he is stout enough to smack the animals with the .338 Lapua. He would be better served with a 7-08. The 338 round certainly would be better in the wind and delivering enough energy to knock down the rams. I am wondering if the rams would be damaged by said round.
A couple of 7-08 rifles have become available to me. I am doing my due diligence to get the best fit/form and function to get started. Alan, you will not want to shoot a 338 Laupa that many rounds! Now as for 7-08 vs 6.5X47, or 55 ....matter of personal preference and what you can afford to load and shoot. BTW CZFL is still a cheeky youngster....we'll see how humble he is after next weekend and his first bigger match.
McAlice, yes Kevin does need to be prepared for travel with this youngster with or without HP, to all of the mentioned ranges at least, not to mention Winnie, and CBC.
