541 vs 581

Hi to all. I'm a new member and have gotten hooked on smallbore rifle. I've allready participated in 4 matches at the local range with a 10/22 but want to get a hunter rifle. So here's my ?. If i go with a Mark Pharr stock and a shilen barrel with Marvins goodies on board would the 541 (which to my understanding is heavier than the 581)be to heavy to make it compete in the hunter catagory. Which should I choose or does it matter because I'm planning on using a Pharr stock? Your help and comments are greatly appriciated.

If you're going to spring for this sort of expense, save up the extra pennies for the Anschutz action, meaning TRIGGER. Trust me on this.

Marv bolts the 5022 Anschutz trigger we have onto the 541/581's...with a little of his magic dust of course...

Hey,
I drink Vodka or Rum, never had any problem with these guys getting into my liquor cabinet. Now TE and Willie the clown might be another story.

Back to the original question and a bit more. Most of the early 541's shot pretty good. Mine will shoot along with any Anschutz 1712. The triggers can be turned down to 2 lbs in a couple minutes. As far as weight they are light and even made the old weight easily. I added quite a bit of weight to the forearm of mine.
There seems to have been a change at Remington during the mid 90's and the 541's after that time were not as good as the older ones. If there is a groove cut around the bolt knob this seems to be one of the later ones and actions were not as smooth and they seemed to not shoot quite as good.
The 581 was the econo version of the 541 with usually a birch stock an a non adjustable trigger. I have seen them with magazines and with single shot adaptors. I have had a couple of these that shot under 1". The actions are the same and the triggers can be made adjustable. It was a good light design that worked.
Before they upped the hunter weight for the Anschutz and opened up the rules for the new light rifle "hunter" race guns the firing lines were filled with the the rem 541's.
If you are new to this sport and have a 541 I would consider shooting it like it is for a year or so and getting your feet wet. Then if you want to spend the money go for it.

I'm new to silhouette and recently purchased a 581 in nice shape for a pretty good price.

The trigger on mine is really heavy so I'm having it re-worked.

After that what would be the best use of my money to get the gun to an acceptable level of accuracy for a beginner?
