Few questions from a noob

Greetings everyone,

I have returned to shooting after a longer hiatus, and became interested in silhouette. I have been practicing with an air-rifle and have been thinking about buying a .22 rifle too.

I was wondering if a single-shot would be sufficient or if a repeater is recommended/necessary? I would prefer to buy the right equipment at the beginning even if it means wait a little because I have discovered from other hobbies that upgrading is more expensive in a long run.

The other question is whether there is a small-bore silhouette shot in Southern California (San Diego, Los Angeles area), so that I could attend a match and watch.

Welcome aboard Nemo.... You can use either a single shot or repeater. My new rifle is a single shot and my other is a repeater. I decided to go with the single shot as it helps me slow down between shots and take my time. You will see people with both, so it's just a personal choice. Lone Ringer should be able to provide you all the info you need on CA ranges and dates.

There are Smallbore matches at Lake Wohlford near Escondido, CA the second Sunday of the month, not sure if Dulzura is hosting SB (I have no information regarding those two locations).

At the West End Gun club near San Bernardino they have SB the first Sunday of the month but you have to see the calendar to make sure they are having a match (no silhouette matches in December) and if we get enough rain it may be hard to cross the creek. http://www.wegc.org/wordpress/?page_id=2033

You can shoot SB at the Los Angeles Shooting Ranges the second weekend of the month, the third Sunday of the month and the fourth Saturday of the month. Those are not regular rifle matches since we shoot alongside IHMSA handgun and Cowboy shooters.

The range at Pala is still going and we shoot all three Cowboy rifle silhouette disciplines, BP cartridge and some 5th Sundays military and regular HP rifle silhouette.

Nemo, Don't forget about a scope.....probably more important than the gun as some out of the box CZ's shoot fairly well. A lot of shooters are using Leupold 6.5x20 EFR with a .006 target dot. Buy it once and never have to worry about it again. About $725 for Chickens Shooting supplys. There are other choices but this scope has been a staple for silhouette shooting for a long time

thank you for the reminder, I am not forgetting the scope. Fortunately, I have a friend who has several scopes I can borrow, but, ironically no .22. Consequently, I was asking about the single-shot v the repeater, as I used to have a (single-shot) Suhl 150, which I really liked, and was wondering if it would work since I understand that one has only 2.5 minutes for a bank of animals, and from my 10m shooting I remember that it took me along time to shoot 5 shots. Secondly, I wanted to know about a silhouette match as I would like to go look, and if people will let me, maybe shoot several rifles to get a feel for what is it all about.
