It is hard to improve on the current formula 1712 action, Lilja barrel, and Pharr RT/S stock assembled by one of three or four different builders. But before buying anything try every different rifle you can find and think hard about your build objectives.

How heavy a rifle do you like? Where should it balance? Length of pull? Barrel length? Anything over 14.5" is balance and style. Stock style; Pharr, Wooster, McMillan/Anschutz? Single stage or two stage trigger? Maybe you prefer blue steel and walnut (okay with good bedding)? Maybe this takes you back around to The Formula, or maybe it takes you to a 40x or a custom action.

As Kitty has pointed out, we play Follow-The-Leader a lot because this stuff is expensive, and The Formula works very well, plus it retains value if you decide to sell or trade later.

For Hunter, a 1712 with a Wooster or Phar stock topped with a Leupold variable of more than 20x.

For Standard, An Anchutz repeater with a McMillan stock topped with a Leupold variable of more than 20x.
